Adding a 2nd battery to a boat

I'm adding some amps and speakers to my boat and I want to add another battery to make sure I don't get stranded when anchored. Anyone have experience adding a second battery to a boat? How big of a PITA is it?

It’s not. Do you have the space? Are you just hooking a radio up? Moving all but motor to this battery?

I definitely have the space. Not super handy, so apprehensive.
Main priority is the radio not draining the battery, as I anchor and listen to music for 2-4 hours at a time and the new setup will probably drain the battery. I'd be fine just running the new radio off of it if that simplifies the setup.

I have this system and it works very well. Same deal - I'm running a stereo system on one battery and electronics and engine on another.

Like most have mentioned, get a Perko switch. Here is mine with a dual bank charger mounted as well.

Just get a high quality, water resistant BT speaker.

2 way switch is the way to go. I have 2 house batteries and if I’m anchored for awhile I’ll turn it to 1 then switch to 2 or both to crank. I usually put it in both when running the motor. Batteries are 6 yrs old and haven’t had an issue.

Maybe I am missing something, but I do not understand the purpose of a switch if he's going to do nothing but run the audio off the second battery.

Right. That’s why I asked him what was going to the second battery. It’ll lower that radio forever before needed to be topped off.

if its just for the radio then dont, just add a motorcycle/ATV battery instead. they are small, usually 6"x3"x5" and have all the power you ever need for a whole weekend on one charge. plus they only weight 5 lbs instead of a 30lbs full sized battery and you can get them for around $25 at walmart

Add second battery for whatever electronics you want. This is what’s typically called a “house” battery. Use a ACR or VSR charging relay to let house battery charge off engine battery. If you kill the house battery it won’t effect your cranking battery, but house will still charge from engine when running.

I have toyed with adding a medium sized lithium for just my electronics so I do not have to worry about my crank battery, but that brings in other issues I don't want to fool with, and mainly, another charger.

its so both batteries can be tied together so they charge from the motor but the switch lets the boat battery can be disconnected from draining power with radio on and motor off

Can you mix Lithium and AGM with that?

Are your cranking batteries also lithium? If so I think you’ll be fine, but honestly I haven’t fooled with lithium batteries or even really looked into them in boat applications. I think it just gets tricky when you mix them with lead acid or AGM. I’m sure there are some good threads on hull truth for that question.

Make sure you can isolate them or charge both at the same time.
