1991: 14.1M
2016: 11.5M

It is said there are half the number of hunters now than in 1950. And the numbers are expected to get worse as the Boomers age out of the sport.

Small game hunting such as squirrel and rabbit is a great way to introduce new people to hunting, as is an exciting dove shoot

It sure doesn't seem like there are less hunters. I don't ever remember seeing a box stand on every highline and pipeline that crosses the interstate in the 90's.

I really think it has to do with more of the land being leased up or owned by big money.

A majority of the hunters are hunting closer and closer together.

Also people can't just go hunt in the back yard any more.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case in Louisiana, but it would be interesting to see those numbers broken down by state.

Yet more money is poured into the hunting industry and conservation than ever before.

I know people hate to hear this but it’s getting really expensive and pricing people out. Sure you can work your arse off hunting public land and deal with that frustration but in the 80’s and 90’s you didn’t have to. Made it a lot easier to get new people started.

I certainly dont see it in most places I hunt seem to be more crowded than ever

tensas nwr is the exception

when I was younger the family would all put in for the lottery gun hunt there were times that we didn't get drawn
the campgrounds were slap full of coonasses cutting up and having a good time

now its 100% draw chance
and the campgrounds aren't near what they once were

The main factor is cost. I live in south Texas and if I couldn’t hunt in my back yard then there is no way I would be able to hunt. On the cheap end to join a hunting ranch around here you are looking at 5000 a gun. Since my dads time it has turned into a rich mans sport.

Boils down to access. You hear guys like Steve Rinella and anyone in that age demographic or older talk about hunting the woods around their house as kids. Nothing was posted, and you could knock on just about any door and get permission to hunt.

That's just not the case anymore. I doubt many people in my generation could speak of similar experiences. It takes a lot of the almighty dollar to get onto private land now. Sure, there are still some places that you can get that permission, but those are few and far between.

The only expense that keeps people away is the expense of money and/or energy. Money to access private land, or loads of energy to have success on public land. If anyone tells you it's anything else, they are lying. You don't need the most expensive guns, camo, and equipment in order to hunt. License fees aren't so extravagant to keep people out of the game. It's access, plain and simple.

Just wondering how they come up with that number? Is it licenses sold? If so how do they account for lifetime license?

I think it is by licenses sold. Don’t know about the lifetime option but I’m sure they can track that.

I hate to take this to the political realm, but you have to remember Democrats/liberals now run the USFWS. Just like the weather service, you can't believe any news that might help or hurt their agenda. And fewer hunters is good news to them, it relates indirectly to gun control.

Reminds me of the time I asked if any OB'er would give me permission to hunt their land for a few squirrels. You could have sworn I asked to frick their wife and burn their woods down.

Its either fight everyone and their momma at the public shite show or pay out the nose to hunt with others looking to set the b&c world record.

No more common folk enjoying nature.

Its sad to say but lawsuit happy era has triggered not going hunt unless leased. I highly doubt you are that type but no one wants to lose everything they owned because some guy got hurt hunting squirrels. Sad sad day in the world.

Like has been said, back in the day most anyone has no problem giving people access to hunt.

Our litigious society has ruined that. People are terrified of being sued if someone does something damned stupid but wants to blame the landowner.

Any chance this combined with CWD will make hunting land somewhat affordable?

… I truly hope so, but highly doubt it.

I don't remember your thread but it probably had something to do with the fact that begging on an internet forum is lazy as hell.

And now you are whining about it.
