Just an FYI, tikka uses long actions for every caliber.

Any modern centerfire cartridge will easily take deer at the distances you said.

Of those two it's really up to you.

For me, it would be the .308.
the .308 offers probably the biggest range of available loadings of any cartridge.

You can load 110gr for varmint hunting all the up to 220gr subsonics for use with a silencer to get stupid quiet.

I have 3 (though I will be changing calibers on one of those)

Now that I think about it, I have an extra AR barrel in .308 sitting in my closet.

.308 for me bc of the short action, but like everyone else said. It doesn’t matter

Just me but I prefer the short action of 308 or 7-08 vs long action.

Regardless, deer don't care.

Flip a coin. If you’re disappointed on the caliber it chooses, buy a 7-08.

7-08, 270, 308......it really doesn't make any significant difference as long as the proper bullet is used. When I bought my first big game rifle, I bought a Winchester Model 70 in 270 Winchester. I'd grown up reading all the writings of Jack O'Conner, the biggest proponent of the 270 at the time. When my son started deer hunting, I bought him a 308. A few years ago, I came across a really good buy on the T/C Compass. I bought one for grand kids to use some day. And the caliber was...........7-08 Remington

Have Browning A-Bolts in both. Prefer the .270. Shoots flatter over a longer distance. 100 yrds and in, it’s a toss up.

I’m really looking at the browning hell’s canyon as far as rifle choice. Which makes no sense with me saying in the previous post I wouldn’t shoot over 250 yards often, if ever.

Looking at the same. I have two A-Bolts and love them. They drive tacks.

Also looking at the new Springfield Waypoint 2020 in .308 if they will ever get to dealers.

Both are great deer rounds. Get them both! I’m currently using an old Savage .270 I bought from a fella and love it. I’m planning to pick up an AR-10 at some point, if we will still be able to. Good luck!

Lol....I have 308 & 7-08. Can’t find 7-08 bullets. I prefer the 308, though. 270 is a good choice also.

It's actually about 5in but it doesn't matter.

My general opinion is that if you are getting a long action rifle, get a .30-06 so that in the event you ever do travel somewhere to hunt, you have a rifle with a very wide range of bullet options to do it with. I personally don't see a logical reason to pick the .270, the '06 has a plenty flat enough trajectory for as far as I'm comfortable shooting. Recoil from the .270 is probably less but I've never noticed any difference between them.

Having a short action rifle does save a little weight and length and theoretically should be more accurate than a long action rifle.

If you are shooting less than 250yds I'd go with a .308.

If money is no problem buy what ever you want but I'd stick to a 500 to 700 dollar range gun.

You can’t go wrong with either one. Do you want a short action or long action? If you want a compact rifle, get the .308 in a short action.
