Looking for a new rifle for deer hunting. Won’t be hunting any bigger game than that. I’m torn between the .270 and .308. Everything I’ve read basically says it’s about preference. I won’t be taking a shot past 250 yards I wouldn’t think. Would like a little less recoil, but that’s not a deal-breaker.

6.5CM is the best.

I wanted a LH .270 but found a used .308 for cheap. I've been more than satisfied. Besides, .308 is one of the easiest ammos to find right now.

I obsessed over this when I was buying my first deer rifle. I bought a 308 and all my deer were just as dead as the deer my buddy shoots with a 270. Buy what you can find and get some ammo, it'll be fine with either one.

You’re talking about only 3” more drop with a .308 at 400 yards

Consensus is pretty much any of the widespread calibers are good under 300yd

I was between these two and the 7mm-08. Everything I read said it really doesn’t matter between these for white tail hunting. I liked the Tikka T3x and Bowie on had that in .270.

That is what I went with and I’m happy.

That would be a pick 'em for me.

I would give a slight edge to .308 for ammo availability and if you re-load, the wide variety of .30 cal bullets. Also, slightly more compact rifle due to the short bolt.

I bought my wife a 6.5 at Christmas, I’ve shot a few times. Just trying to find the right combo as far as the grain. I’ve had 129’s in it, but I think we may go up some.

I'm in the "it really doesn't matter" camp, but if I had to pick I'd go .308.

Ammo more available, (usually) available super cheap in the practice varieties, and covers a wider range of applications
Short action slightly preferable to long (assuming what you are buying actually has a true short action)
Your distances aren't long enough that ballistics matter

I’m really looking at the browning hell’s canyon as far as rifle choice. Which makes no sense with me saying in the previous post I wouldn’t shoot over 250 yards often, if ever. Just seems like they are the smoothest shooting. Maybe I’m wrong. I’ve looked at them along with the regular x bolt, and then the tikka as well

Flip a coin. If you’re disappointed on the caliber it chooses, buy the other one.

I just bought the x-bolt .308 WIN with a walnut stock after the recommendation from the OB. Looking forward to the next season

I am so glad to see this. I have a savage .270 now and it’s a tack driver. This was my first rifle I got about 20years ago. I shoot Hornady 140 interlocks out of it. ( that’s what the rifle loves). I also have a Remington 300 win mag that’s about 10 or so years old. But I am in the same position where I would like another rifle. I am kind of leaning towards a .308 myself. Reason is I’m looking for something with a thread barrel so I can put a can on it. Also it would be nice to have something else to play with.

Both are fantastic deer rifles. My brother has a rem 700 in 270 and I have a rem 700 in 308. I prefer the short action but both guns will kill a deer dead. I've been able to find a few boxes of .308 over the past few months and he has not been able to find .270 FWIW.

i prefer my 308 than my 270.

but, it's mostly a mental thing. i always wanted a 308 simply because it was a sniper rifle in nam.

Well yeah, that's practically point-blank for either cartridge. I like reloading for .308, so many options out there and I have a bolt-action and a semi-auto chambered for it.

Flip a coin.. 308 short action gets my vote. But 270 will kill deer the same

308 is my opinion. But what does your hunting buddy shoot? Might be good to both have the same bullets (just in case)
