I have over time gathered up some different 308 rounds to see what my sig 716 likes. I have not deer hunted with any of them (or that much tbh). I'm going next weekend with my new remington 700 and I'm wondering what I want to use and wanted to hear if any of y'all had feed back on any of these. Range will probably be 100 yards or less. I plan to see what ones my gun shoots well but some of them are more match than hunt.

The hog hammer drops them. The Barnes lead is great

The JagerPro guy shoots Fed Premium in his Ar-10 308 for hogs.

He has asked Federal for ammo, sponsorship, advertising, etc. And they have turned him down (this was via a conversation with him maybe two years ago so things might have changed).

In the meantime, Remington and Hornady have come to him and offered him sponsorship to switch to their ammo. But he refuses because he likes the Fed Premium so much.

Go watch his hog videos. 90% of his animals go straight to the dirt at impact. It's pretty impressive.

Either of those Federal rounds are reliable construction. The Remington Core Lokt is fine.

From 100 yards with a decent rifle, it's hard to blame a miss on the Ammo. But I like accuracy above just about any other criteria. Good shot placement will make up for all kinds of other deficiencies.

So, I would shoot 3 shot groups with each round from a lead sled or other type of bench rest, cleaning the barrel between each group.

See which round your rifle likes best.

Take as much of the human error out of the equation as possible. I strap my rifle down and use a remote trigger control when testing ammunition.

I hear the barns tax come up a lot...just wasn't sure with the name hog hammer. Marketing ploy I guess. I was leaning to the Remington's or federals.

I was going to 3 shot group them to see what the 20" 1-10 twist of the rifle liked. I don't have a sled but I been wanting too get one. I don't have a ton of trigger time so I'd like to take me out of the equation lol.

Yep, just a marketing ploy. My Ruger likes those and the federals. I've shot both the hornady's as well, both we excellent groups, just haven't shot a deer with them yet

Your gun will like what it likes, but in terms of quality and construction of the cartridges themselves, the 165gr GMX is the winner from that lineup

Edited to fix derp

I have killed two deer this year. One with a 150 gr core lokt, and one with a 150 gr Hornady Interlock both deer were DRT kills. The Interlock hit a rib going in pulverized the lungs and broke the opposite side rib. The damage was pretty impressive.

Personally, I avoid using loads using match type bullets (Federal 168 gr Sierra Match King and Hornady 165 gr A-Max) for big game. Yeah, they should be accurate and if you slip the bullet between the ribs you should get adequate penetration, but if the bullet hits the rib (or some other bone on entrance) or you have a shot at a bad angle, you may NOT get adequate penetration. There's a reason they're labelled "match." You'll read of success stories w/ match bullets, but why risk it? For shots at 100 yards everything else should be ok, although some may be better than others. When used on deer in a 308, 180 grain bullets may not expand very well. The GMX also may not expand well on deer in a 308. If I were buying a box of ammo, I'd use 150 grain bullets and look for Nosler Accubonds, Hornady SST/Interlock or Winchester Power Point. What kind of terrain will you be hunting?

If your gun shoots the top one or the hog hammer. Those would be my first choice.

The hornady with the 168 amax would be next.

The fusions are great on deer. I load 165 sierra game kings for my wife's 308. The do a nice job as well and are very accurate. I think you can get that bullet via Federal Premium.
