avoid the "Match" cartridges for game. save those for paper. Use the others. My Savage and Remington 700 seem to like the Core Lokt and have not had any issues with the results

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll probably leave out the match stuff and use what ever shoots best out of the core or hog and maybe the bonded trophy.

The amax bullet in the hornady match is a different breed. No worries about it for use while hunting.

The other match ammo will do just fine if you do your part.

I'm usually a snob regarding most things, but I just haven't found a reason to stop using corelokts. Ive tried.

Hands down, my top choice is the Hornady Superformance 165 gmx. I prefer the SST over GMX, but you have a superior bullet there.

Then the Federal Premium, then the corelockt.

I also avoid hunting with match bullets like Amax.

I've never shot a deer with the fusion nor the hog hammer, so I cannot give first hand account.

Again, I love Hornady Superformance bullets. Dozens of whitetails, a few muleys and an elk from my .308 in 165 grains. Good luck!!!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I tend to use core lokt as you can find it anywhere there is ammo that way I can always shoot the same round.

I would sight my rifle in with what you plan to use and then stick to that.

Also if you have an auto make sure it cycles reliably.

I'm surprised you would recommend the match kings for hunting? Reason?

I would take the Barnes over anything in that selection every day without a doubt. The tsx is absolutely brutal when it hits a deer. Even from a 223 that bullet will put them down.

Damn near everything works in .308 it's one of the best general purpose deer calibers there is.

Out of what you've got shown there, This is the order I'd put them in as far as being ideal for shooting deer.

Fusion
Trophy bonded
Core lock
GMX/TSX
A max
Matching

I wanted to ask your answer but forgot lol.

Wish I had about 7 deer to shoot with each one...you know...for research

I am hunting with a bolt gun this time...the reason for most of these were to see if they cycled in my sig ar10. Some of them had cycling issues.

using this

The round I was thinking of is one of my favorites: Federal Premium loaded with the 165 Sierra Game Kings are awesome

In addition, I'm generally a big proponent of the solid copper rounds, specifically the Hornady GMX and Barnes TSX. Hopefully Freedom Group doesn't ruin Barnes like they did everything else

I'd be very comfortable hunting with any of those 3.

God that magpul stock is sick

Yea I had read about the game kings a bit and also just ran across hornady precision hunter. Have you ever looked at those?

Question about the tsx...on the hog hammer rounds it's says "hog tuned Barnes". Are all the tsx the same or did they change it up on this round? Marketing crap or really tuned.

The stock is the sole reason I went with a rem 700. I like Magpuls polymer and just loved the look of this stock vs any of the other "precision" type stocks. Kinda heavy setup so I wouldn't stalk with it but in a box stand it should be fun.

I shot one deer with 165 game kings out of my 06. The bullet exited in about 4 pieces after hitting a rib. They shoot exceptionally well but they're too fragile for me. You can tell the core is soft because the tips deform very easily. The jacket is also thin like a match bullet. I only suggest them for deer when people have a very picky rifle that won't shoot anything else good enough. I'll take the 1/2" bigger groups the partitions give me in exchange for 100% exits. With something that has as much horsepower as the 06, I want to hit bones on purpose.

I'm not an avid deer hunter but I shoot the Federal's out of my 308 and haven't had any problems.

When used on deer in a 308, 180 grain bullets may not expand very well.

I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Tiger! I'm surprised you're the only one who noticed that those are very heavy bullets for 308.

The way I usually look at loadings in .308 caliber:

308 = 150gr bullet
30-06 = 165gr bullet
300 Win Mag = 180gr or 200gr bullet

Those will get good expansion and should drop a deer pretty well. The heavier you go with the bullet, the less expansion and energy transfer you will get.

That being said, within 100 yards I doubt it will matter much. But you might as well stack the deck in your favor.

That's a pretty good general thought.

I shoot 180 partitions out of my 06, but I'm aiming directly for the off-side shoulder knuckle on purpose unless it's a very steep angle shot, in which case you need the penetration anyway. I just like heavy bullets. I also use the gun a bunch where I can't see more than about 50 yards and at those velocities you'll need a heavy bullet. The front of the partition is soft and seems to expand pretty well even when you don't hit heavy bone. I haven't a deer inside 100 yards with them yet though.

The good thing about the .308 is the velocities are moderate and you don't really need a premium bullet to get good consistent results on deer. Just about every regular ol 150gr cup and core bullet out there will expand well and hold together.
