Unnecessary background:

My Grandpa had one. Gave it to my dad. Dad gave it to me but then forgot he gave it to me and took it with him when he moved across the country.

anecdotal...when I was 15 I damn near blew my Grandfather's head off with his own gun. Long story... wont get into that.

I want a 30-30. I seek recommendations for make and model.

Marlin model 36. I have one of the older guns made in 1967. They have crept up in price the last few years since Marlin went out of business. Ruger bought the Marlin brand out of bankruptcy and slowly getting guns to market.

I would try and find a good used 36.

Marlin 336 before they got bought by Remington. Before 2007.

You can scope it if you want, or there are several different choices for aperture sights. The buckhorn rear sights on just about every lever action rifle are garbage.

Love my 30-30. If we didn’t have long right of ways on the lease it would probably be my only deer rifle.

Great cartridge, but ammo will probably be hard to find in this post 2020 world

Even 30-30 was a little challenging for a while.

I inherited my Grandfather's Marlin 35Rem and ammo has been difficult but not impossible. I've been able to stock pile quite a bit.

When I bought my Marlin new in 2001, I think a box of Super X 30-30 was $9.99.

My 1st rifle was a Marlin 30/30.
If I were buying a new one it would no doubt be a Winchester Model 94.

This is the only deer rifle I own. I only deer hunt once a year, but for anything up to +/- 100 yards, its golden.

As a youngster I had the Winchester 94 and later a Marlin 36 and loved both of them.

Henry makes one hell of a good firearm.

Marlin for sure.

I just got built an AR in 350 legend. Almost identical ballistics to a 30-30. We can't hunt with a 30-30 where I live.

Just a beautiful rifle, fun to shoot too. Regret selling mine 20 years ago.

I’ve got an old marlin my dad won for selling the most raffle tickets for his school in 1967. It’s a great gun and has folded up a few deer through the years. My buddy just bought a Henry. It’s pretty sweet.

ETA
He also bought the leverevolution rounds for it. I told him downshift didn’t approve and he now has corelokts.

I prefer the pre-Remington Marlin's if for no other reason than I don't care of the top ejection of the Winchester. I know they changed that in later models but still not enough to make me trade my Marlin for a Winny

Marlin 336 with a low power 1-7 scope in detachable scope rings is all that most deer hunters need. From 0-200 yards with rem cor lokts you will stack deer.
