That is true but where I hunt in CO during the Winter all of the animals congregate in the low areas(ag fields) to find food not covered in several feet of snow. Colorado Parks and Wildlife also has a large supplemental feeding program which congregates deer.

I guess the one saving grace for Mississippi is that the majority of bucks killed in the state are 1-1/2 to 2 yrs old... so people won’t really notice them showing symptoms at 3 anyway....

I just got an email outlining what at least one club on Davis is going through. Just some of the points-I am not going to post the entire email.

>... collect heads from mainly 3.5 y/o bucks and older for sampling a few times during the season .

>Deer must be quartered and can have bones in quarters going back into La

>Deer have to be deboned if going into Ms

>No brain or spinal column can leave the island

>...euro mounts have to have the brain material removed .
Shoulder mount deer have to have the cape removed on the island to leave the skull and spinal column

>...a tagging system should be created for meat being transported off the island with hunters info , property taken , date harvested , club name and buck or doe designation to be placed inside ice chest on top in ziplock bag

I started listening to a pretty good podcast on cwd, cjd, mad cow, today. The meat eater #70. I'm over half done and it is a good listen so far.

I'm confused, I didn't think either deer was found in that area? I thought they were both further east of the river.

Can't comment on that because I have no idea why this is being done in any particular area, nor what areas are being affected.

They are being proactive about the area in prep for a worse condition. I see many places are adopting these rules quickly to protect deer herds. Of course most that I see doing it are well established clubs with intelligent people on them with experience knowing what a disease can do such as Doctors and Medical professionals. Smart move with just a touch more effort to hopefully curtail any large outbreaks from effecting them.

What a disaster for deer hunting. Slowly creeping everywhere
50 year run of booming deer hunting pretty much nationwide.....

all good things must come to an end......... ask anyone that was fortunate enough to hunt wild quail in the south east before mid 80s...

Davis island is Mississippi. State line runs around it on Palmyra chute where the river channel used to be.
LDWF enacted a feeding ban in East Carroll, Madison, Tensas parishes as a safeguard. But everyone I know is still feeding. Those clubs have serious deer herds to protect and I'm sure the deer are so used to feeders, they don't know what to do otherwise.

The fact that mad cow made the jump to humans is some scary shite especially for hunters as it is a prion disease very similar to CWD.

If any of you don't know about vCJD it is one of the worst deaths imaginable, you literally turn into a zombie.

The ban was lifted after none of the deer tested in LA came back positive.

I'm familiar with davis and diamond, like I said I just thought the deer found were pretty far east and north or there.

Unfortunately I think there is a lot of truth to this, first the proliferation of wild hogs, now CWD, I feel it is part of a cycle

If I want to get my venison tested prior to consuming, how would I go about that? I know it's a terribly small chance that any deer I kill with have CWD and an even smaller chance that it will transfer to humans, but given that my kids eat the stuff, I'd like to take all precautions.

from my understanding, and I may be completely wrong, but you do not test the meat per say, you have to test a part of the nervous system, specifically a portion of the brain stem of the deer...and exactly how to take the sample and where to bring it to... I have no information on

Mississippi has set up testing stations in each county. Not sure about Louisiana. You need to provide portion of the spinal material and the lymph nodes for testing. Both can be collected from the head with a small segment of the spinal column. I believe the turnaround is approximately a week, but i suspect that will will go up once everyone starts sending their deer in.

MIL's husband died from CFJD in 2016. Went undiagnosed almost to the end as he went from falling down to bed ridden. She donated his brain to the Cleveland Clinic if i remember correctly since they are the leading research hospital for the disease. It is thought that he contracted after a blood transfusion for hip replacement.
It's bad shiat boys.

Every form of hunting has seen this... happen.......

45 years ago - nobody could have reasonably predicted the rise and run that deer hunting would have.

I'm gonna be hunting about 3 miles from the lake elvis Presley drop off this weekend. If I kill I damn sure plan on having it tested. I'll probably eat the meat either way but if positive wont feed it to other folks

Edit: 1800 ft as the crow flies. Damn right I'm dropping them off
