PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss (WJTV) - According to the Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, the second case of Chronic Wasting Disease has been confirmed in Mississippi. A 1.5-year-old male white-tailed deer collected on October 8, 2018 in Pontotoc County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) from initial testing. This is the second animal in Mississippi testing positive for the disease, which is fatal to white-tailed deer. A sample will be shipped to the National Veterinary Sciences Laboratory in Iowa for an additional, definitive test. MDWFP encourages hunters to assist with CWD monitoring efforts by voluntarily submitting samples for testing. A list of CWD sample collection locations can be found on their website.

Just ban supplemental feeding throughout the whole state already. Try and keep it from spreading for as long as possible.

I still remember when a few MDWFP biologists resigned after the commissioners ignored their recommendation of keeping feeding illegal. At the time I didn't think much of it but now it seems really dumb to ignore the advice of the people to you pay to give you their specialty advice.

Pontotoc county is between Tupelo (Lee county) and Oxford (Lafayette county)

Measuring on google maps. Aprox. 150 miles as the crow flies from the first case.

I thought I was opening up a thread about a 2 headed deer, but this is a lot worse than having to score something like that, dang it all...

Sorry for the noob question, but why would this matter?

Not a big hunter so genuinely curious.

CWD is believed to be transmitted by saliva

Kind of like you would not want to participate in bobbing for apples at a herpes convention.

Go read a few posts on the Mississippi whitetail fb page. "These here so called EXPErTs are trying to keep me from feeding my family!! Ted Nugent said more deer are killed by cars!"

I hunt this county. I'm nervous AF

Well looks like I’ll be getting every deer taken tested.

Pontotoc County line splits part of my property with majority of it in Pontotoc.

Terrible news. So far, we haven't had any reported cases of it being found in humans due to consumption right?

What are Mississippi's regs regarding bone disposal of a positive deer?
