Following a hurricane 5 years ago, I recovered a large stash of 22 rounds. Maybe 4000. I had washed them and then treated with a light oil. Today at the gun range 6 of 10 rounds misfired, and I will throw the lot away. Check your inventory from time to time to avoid keeping useless stuff.

the hurricane ruined them bud, by dumping them from the 3 rd floor closet to the back yard.

picking them up, rinsing the sand and dirt off, wiping with an oiled rag and not using for 5 years did not work. The insite here was shared to alert others to that result.

As a youngster i always carried 22 cartridges in my pants pockets and my mom would proceed to wash them in the wringer washing machine. Those that fell to the bottom of the tub were retrieved when she removed the dasher for cleaning and they were put in a tin can on the shelf. That was my source of ammo when I had exceeded my allotment. Most worked just fine but I did have a couple that turned out to be squib loads and stuck in the barrel.
Shoot them up, but be prepared to clear a stuck round. Better than pitching them out.

Probably the worst thing you can do to ammo.

Its not the water, its the OIL that messed em up.

you ruined them yourself, should have just cleaned them off with adamp rag and nothing else.

you never put ammo in water, and light oil is worse than regular oil because it seeps in wetting the powder.

you arent playing with a full deck

Anyone had any bad experiences or recommendations, for shotgun shells that got wet on a duck hunting trip, and have been sitting in a canister for about 4 years now? Some have a little bit of rust on the brass but nothing else. Just trying to see if this is dangerous or can mess up my gun?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but since it’s a thread about ammo misfiring, I thought I’d just ask the question in here.

Yeah, you probably need to go ahead and send them to me.

Just kidding…..yes, I still have some buckshot from the early 80’s that have corrosion on the brass and they still work. I’ve used them in an old single shot so I couldn’t say if it might cause a feeding issue or not. Some 0000 steel wool would probably clean them up fine.

My boy is a duck hunter and I’ve noticed the Monarch shells from academy start corroding quick. They must have a high alloy of something in the casing that doesn’t hold up well to moisture. I usually grab those for the single shot and use them on the beavers.

Suppose I’m not familiar with using recovered flood ammo. Just assumed it would all be ruined if it got wet.

What is the right thing to do here? Can you actually recover and use that ammo?

Using old reloads 7 years ago in a pump shotgun for duck hunting. First load misfired, left the wadding in the barrel, second load a couple seconds later blew the stopped barrel. Since then I will not use reloads.

you might want to take your censorship of gun safety topics to the political board. There are more leftists there.

I haven't seen any replies to your OP that delved into censorship. You could have easily Googled the topic before ruining the ammo - and then you would have avoided getting offended by after-the-fact comments.

About 15 years ago I had a Remington shell slow fire on me in a BPS. The thing about a BPS is that is ejects out of the bottom of the shotgun. Had some mallards fly over (as I said 15 years ago) and I pulled the trigger on one of them and pumped the shell out on habit without noticing it hadn't fired. It went off right as it was ejected from the chamber. All I saw was flame shooting down. A piece of the brass blasted off and nicked my waders.

Called Remington and they had me send them the rest of the box along with the busted shell. They ended up sending me a case of shells and some gear. They said the shells must have gotten wet at some point.
