My dad has a 10/22 and an old browning (i think) pump 22. My brother and I used to fight over who got to shoot the pump. Both of them were fun as all hell. You can't go wrong with a 10/22.

Do the CZ rimfires have the ‘backward’ safety? That’d be a hard pass for me for a new shooter.

I have the 457 American, and it is a sweet little gun. Great fit and feel. If you were choosing a gun for me thanks what I’d pick. There are trigger upgrades available, but I think the stock trigger is pretty good as is
I also believe the bolt action will teach a young hunter to slow down and focus on what they are doing.

Vote for CZ bolt action here as well. Mine is my absolute favorite gun I own, and is unbelievably accurate.
Ruger 10/22 is a well made, fine rife. As is the Marlin 60.
I do not recommend a lever action as a first rifle. In my opinion they are not as safe because of the cycling mechanism being in such close proximity to the trigger.

Just for reference, son is 10. So not super young. He's shot 10/22's and a lever action 22lr before in addition to my .223 and .300 BO. I hunted growing up, but since we've moved out to the Houston area, I'm separated from the easy access I had before, so all my shooting is at the range. His will be 99.9% of the time as well. Maybe once a year at Thanksgiving we could get out to the camp of friends and family. We went to the range this past weekend with a friend who had a customized 10/22 and he seemed to have a good time. With my bigger guns, he's been willing, but doesn't really enjoy it all that much due to the noise and kick. Hoping this builds up his confidence and comfort. I just moved to a new range with a 100 yard indoor range and as a member he gets to tag along for free anytime. The semi auto feature of the 10/22 won't be as cool for him as it was for me as a kid getting to walk the woods and unload on stuff. The 100 yard range has no "rapid" fire, so I don't mind a bolt gun. But again, 10/22 is just so affordable and sufficent, with so many options to make it your own if you so desire (and I'm that kind of person).
Funny thing is he really wants a wood stock. and I want something with a threaded barrel for a suppressor. Not a lot of options in the bolt guns. They are all super cool looking to me, but he truly is drawn to something like the base level 10/22. We are almost certainly going to just end up with that, but just like to look around first.

Not trying to convince you either way because you really can’t go wrong with semi or auto in a 22.
But ruger American is threaded and you can buy an aftermarket stock for it and have what you and he wants.
Check out Boyd’s for a wood lower end price ~200$

I vote bolt action. CZ’s look pretty nice.
Semi autos are overrated for anything less than war or self defense.
For me, bolt actions and lever actions are more fun than auto loaders.

Every young person should start with a single shot.
My uncle taught me to shoot with a single shot lever action with a crappy ejector.

A replacement trigger or a trigger job kit from Brownells at a minimum, makes a big improvement in the accuracy of the 10/22

Bolt action is gonna be more accurate so if you’re more interested in him learning accuracy then buy that.
If you just want him to sling some lead buy the Ruger

Tikka T1X offers wood. Bolt, threaded, walnut, but fairly pricey after stamp and suppressor and scope.
Still…
A Gunbroker option, one of several

That’s great news.

I feel like everyone needs a 10/22 and a bolt action 22.
I love my CZ452 American, I got it before the 457 had been released. Its a slick rifle. I had mine threaded which wasnt a big deal, just a couple weeks without it.

So, the more I think about it, I really want a good bolt action more than he would care. Which ends up with me spending my time, energy, and money on the gun and taking it over, haha. So true best option is to get the 10/22 that he would be happy with now, then get the bolt action I'd be happy with and he can grow into using that as he get's older and really cares about accuracy.

Why do you think this?

I can tell you this.
Buddy of mine owns a Model 54 Match bolt action Anschutz.
We took a 10/22 and put a Volquartsen bull barrel on it, dropped it in a Volquartsen stock and put a trigger kit in it.
Same ammo in both at 35 yards and both on the bags.
Groups were identical. One ragged hole.
He still has the Anschutz but switched to the 10/22 for his squirrel hunting.
Less movement. Subsonic ammo
Head shots only. A little killing machine

Yea, not true with rimfires.
Yep, I have a BRN receiver (Brownells 10/22) that I built with a Voltquartsen carbon fiber barrel and it is my most accurate rimfire rifle.
