.22 cal Air Rifle Suggestions

My father has a bit of a squirrel problem. He needs to eradicate the tree rats. I am going to purchase a .22 cal air rifle to give him for Christmas. I am looking at about $150 max budget. He lives in a neighborhood, so we need it to be quiet (thus the air rifle vs a standard .22) What do you suggest? TIA

Hadn’t messed with air rifles since I was a kid, but a Benjamin Pump was always hard to beat. With that said, check out the Gamo’s. Seem to have really revolutionized the industry

Any crack barrel gamo will be big medicine for squirrels. I always had a .177 as a kid but I imagine the .22s are even better. They all shot good enough for head shots

Picked up a Ruger in wallyworld for this same purpose and threw on an old Nikon scope I had in the safe, damn thing shoots way better than expected and .22 pellets are some pretty bad mojo for the tree rats at reasonable distances.
Way too much scope for the gun but WTF

If you bought a regular spring/piston type air rifle, it will destroy your scope. I'm assuming the Nikon you put on it isn't an air rifle scope when I say that.
But, to the OP, I was also going to mention Ruger for your price range. I have one of the Ruger Blackhawks in .177. I've killed dozens of yard squirrels with it. I think they make a .22 version.

I have had a Crosman Nitro Venom .22 for about 6 or 7 years now. Paid about $150 for it. It has been great. I’ve killed more raccoons, opossums, and armadillos than I can count. It would handle squirrels easily.

No it is not an air rifle scope but as it formally lived on a .300 WHBY I can not see how the air rifle is going to harm it.
Perhaps I am wrong but someone is going to have to explain that one to me.

The vibration and shock from the spring pistons can throw them off pretty regularly. Gas pistons are way better in that regard.

Where a center fire just has recoil an air rifle has some wonky vibration. Itll destroy any cheap non-air rifle scope. A high end nikkon should be fine though, I've only ever broken cheap scopes on them.

You'll get some forward vibration that the scope isn't built to deal with. I've broken a few. I went overkill and put a vx-3 (already had it) since with no issues. Companies make air rifle scopes built for that specific vibration for cheaper.

My buddy is real big into airguns.... he has probably close to $50,000 worth of guns and tanks and compressors. He sticks q-tips in a pile of dirt and shoot the heads off from 20-30 yards.
Most of his guns stay under 1200 FPS, he claims when such a small object breaks the sound barrier it causes to it to wobble and not have as steady of a flight path.

Learn something new every day, as it has been collecting dust a few years I am just going to roll with it, hope for the best, and see what happens.
I'm really wanting an Air Force Condor just for the shits and giggles of it though, they look like fun, wish i knew someone who had one.

I use Hatsan 95 Vortex QE in .22 for my residential varmint dispatching. The thing is an absolute work of art and a dream to shoot. Its often voted best air gun under $200. The non QE is around $150. It has a decent scope. The only negative is weight... 7.8 lbs without scope, probably over 9 lbs with. It also requires some strength to break barrel/cock. This isnt a toy for kids and may be too much air rifle for a older father.

I've killed a lot of backyard squirrels, rats, a few possum and loads of those winged rats known as pigeons over the years with a basic Benjamin Pump .177 caliber gun.
The only problem with that small a caliber is range. It will reach my back fence easily, accurately and with enough force to kill rodents and that is a good 75 ft. from my door.

I bought this Gammo Swarm Maxim .177 in September and have killed 25-30 squirrels in my trees with it. It comes with a 10 shot mag and a scope and has been dead on once I got it sighted in. It's a barrel break pump and it does take some muscle the first 1000 shots or so. But it has gotten easier, or I have gotten stronger.
