I'm driving on the interstate today when a skeeter pulls up in front of me with a Mercury 350. I have twin 350s on my 36 ft CC so I know how fast those engines push a boat 5xs the weight. Is it really necessary to go 100 mph in a bass boat?

I have driven overpowered boats (none that out of wack) and can say that they are damn dangerous...

I fished tourney with a guy that had an Allison with a supped up Mercury. We reached speeds in upper 90s, I did not enjoy that ride one bit.

No way it runs 90 much less 100, that 350 Verado is heavy and has a lot of drag with the size of the lower unit. Mid 80's at best would be my guess, if he wanted to go fast he'd have a 300X and hopped up XS on it.

My friend just took delivery of a 31 Yellowfin with twin 400 racing Mercs. Nutty what they do with outboards now.

It's a Skeeter he'll be lucky to reach 80.

I live in the Shoals area in NW Bama, back in the 80's-90's there were three dealers who would send their fastest boats to each tourney just for the blast off. Lawrenceburg marine with their Bullets, Jaco's with Allison, and Russell's with Shadows. The lead dogs sold a lot of boats and motor hop up services. Lawrenceburg put their "Tennessee tune up" on probably 1/3 of all V6 Mercs around back then. Bass fishermen in this area were worse than teenagers about racing back then. I know I was one of them.

Now anyone with a big enough check book can have an 80, 90, or even 100+ bass boat with a stock 250 or 300 on the right hull. But many have shifted to bigger wider heavier boats from what I see anymore and not as many hot rods on the water as before.

To me, >70mph in a vehicle with no breaks and largely inexperienced operators is absolutely retarded. I don't really know if what I'm about to say is true but it seems to me that at some point the length/ width/ design of a boat becomes the limiting factor towards top end speed. Does a 400 really make a 21' boat appreciably faster than a 300 or even a 250? I had a 18' flatboat with a 90 on it and cruised around 30. I eventually graduated to a 140 and thought I'd be flying around the marsh but I only gained 2-4 mph. I was ultimately happy simply because I no longer had to be concerned about the load to maintain my cruise speed but that's about it. I have to imagine bass boats aren't that appreciably different in terms of similar diminishing returns for increases in HP. NO?

No, it's not necessary. For some people like me - Yes, because we desire it.

Why? Well, "because we can".

In about 1971 I had a Challenger 15' bass boat (similar to an Allison) with 150 Merc. Would do about 62 mph trimmed out (very little boat in water). Pretty squirrelly flying down spillway on Intracoastal or Toledo Bend main channel. Boat would tell you with side to side movement (not desired) when it was too much on plane and about to lose control.

Still, what I wanted - "because we can". At start of my bass fishing club meets we would get to our prime fishing spot of the day very quickly.

Some people like the edge. I used to be one of them. Maybe I still am.

I currently have about 800 miles on my 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. 700+ hp, 125 mph in 1/4 mile, 204 mph top end (car has 200 mph speedometer). Car can get me in so much trouble if I'm not careful - it goes without saying.

Why? Well, "because we can". WTF you say - well, because people are different and every persuasion needs to be respected - "because we can".

When you have to run up river for 25 miles, it helps being able to go 82 instead of 65. My dads basscat would run around 79 tournament load, 82/83 empty, and that was only with a 250xs.

That skeeter you saw may run around the same with that 350, probably a little slower, mainly due to it being a bigger boat

How does someone fish with something that big on the back? He must have had the extra long shaft trolling motor on the front just to reach the water.

Subtle Brag thread is subtle

With that being said. I worked with a fella that fished bass tournaments. He had an Allison with a 250 Evinrude. He had some work done on it, nose cone, the works. Did about 80-85, I went fishing with him once. I caught a a nice little 1 1/2 pound knot head bass went to put it in the live well, He said, "throw that back we scouting", we started fishing at day break and didn't come back in till 3, only time he put his rod down was to move locations at 75 MPH. We caught 6 fish in 9 hrs and threw all of them back. That is a part time job, that's not enjoyable to be. Never went back with him.
