I went deer hunting 4Xs @ 25 years ago, killed two deer, decided it wasn't for me.
Now he's interested, so I gave him my 270. We went to the range and he sighted it in for 100 yds, so good to go with rifle.
Have him set up with friends I know in MS for this year. They hunt bottoms and swamps. Some stands, some on the ground.
My question is what are the must haves for him?
Clothes, gear, etc.

Warm clothes, skinning knife, waterproof boots and a decent set of Bino’s.

No need to go all out until he knows if he likes it or not. Does he like anything else outdoor like small game or bird hunting? When I started I used my duck Camo and and old rifle I had with a cheap scope.

Sky is the limit on what you can buy and spend but a good budget list to let him feel it out would be, the following and all can be bought at academy depending on what he already has.
Rubber knee boots
Merino wool socks
Poly propylene base layer under wear top and bottom
Blue jeans or brown carpenter pants
Hooded sweatshirt
Insulated or fleece jacket
Orange ball cap and orange knit beanie hat
Orange vest
Gloves
Headlamp

Makes me sad to think that you and he have lost twelve years or more of father/son bonding time together. Why are you not part of the scheduled hunting party even as an interested observer?

I’m not leaving the house without a Thermacell

Good knife
Good flashlight

And invest in a good set of insulated bibs. IMO a good bib, jacket set is worth its weight in gold.

He's going to need some waterproof footwear. Check with said friends to see whether the area they hunt calls for hip boots, waders, or just calf boots.

Good camo makes a huge difference over the cheap stuff when it comes to keeping warm without having to deal with putting on a bunch of layers. I've been pleased with mine from Nomad

LED headlamp

ETA: and a Thermacell...especially if he's planning to hunt in the swamp before we get a few overnight freezes

That’s enough for a weekend trip.

Don’t worry, we done plenty. Duck hunting, fishing, football, baseball, basketball, soccer since he was 6, cooking, watching football etc. He’s a grown man who needs to do some stuff on his own.

Sounds like he has most of what he needs other than a headlight.

Don't waste your money on camouflage, it's nothing but marketing. No need for expensive warm boots as he'll be huntin' in the 'Sip.

If on the ground a popup blind and/or folding camp chair.

If they skin deer at camp, then a basic, sharpened knife and saw are needed.

If he's going to walk through water, the cheapest rubber boots Academy has.

Like others said.

Thermacell, boots (muck or Lacrosse), clothes, and binos. Academy bibs work fine for me.

If he is cold and miserable and getting tore up by skeeters he will probably not fall in love with hunting. Get a buck or case knife.

Thanks for the input.

I'm giving him my thermacell, has boots, he has a pretty sharp Kershaw, but may get him a skinning knife and saw.
good binoculars, and a backpack might be a good purchase.

Anyone have thoughts on which daypack/backpack to get him?

This is what I've used since the 90's, I got it at a military surplus store.

Eta: I just looked and those frickers are $100 on Amazon! I don't think I paid more than $20-25 for mine back in the day.

Buy him some good shooting sticks if he’s gonna hunt on the ground. Also will help steady his shooting from a stand. Primos and Bog are the best. Look for tripod to eliminate balance issues.
