Argued with an ol boy I used to work with about. He swore up and down he had seen them an knew where they were at, i almost had him betting me 100$ that there was no way he had seen them or knew where they were at.
Finally I showed him a pilatead woodpecker and asked him if maybe that could have been what he was seeing!!
Poor ol boy had all but spent that money he was gonna collect lol

Real shite, there is a pair that resides in Hickory, Louisiana. Known about them for 15+ years and that is a fact.

They are looking for active so I can't claim the reward. I've killed dozens of them.

Should be easy money then.
Maybe just drop a pin here and have the OB “find” the elusive pecker.

Supposedly there were some in the old Jackson/Bienville WMA. Who knows, the flaming pieces of shits from Weyerhaeuser turned it into private leases, and now there are houses being built on some of that land.

Think you are talking about the red cockaded woodpecker. It’s an endangered species and there are some at the old Jackson bienville Ivory billed man needed vast bottomland hardwoods

I thought the last possible sighting was in the swamps of south Louisiana. Is that considered hardwoods? I thought it was mainly cypress

Several claims of sightings in the Pearl River WMA; however, I don’t think they have conclusive evidence.

Last verified was in tensas at what was called the singer tract after singer sewing machines. Swamps and bottomland hardwoods was where they were found. Nuttall (striped) oak was supposed to be a very important tree for them

Story goes that An old man in the area was telling some ornithologists that he had seen one and they didn’t believe him. They told him to bring him one if he saw another one. He went and shot a pair of them!
