Top billing back in the 80s
Why not add mixed martial arts instead

Boxing in general has fallen off a cliff popularity wise.

I was also wondering this just last night. Boxing used to be my favorite Olympic sport…now I can’t even find it on tv.

I always kind of have to get lucky and stumble upon when a heavyweight championship match is taking place. Many times I'll find out the day after. Seems like the sport should try to do a better job of promoting itself.

Boxing just isn’t as popular.

But the 70s was probably the best decade for boxing. So by the time we got to the 1980 Olympics it was very popular (even though we boycotted).

Then in the 1984 Olympics we absolutely cleaned up in boxing - and America loves a winner so it got a lot of coverage.

There were also less sports to watch -21 total sports in 80 & 84 Olympics vs. 31 now.

Isn’t the judging in Olympic boxing notoriously corrupt/biased?

I remember as a kid going with my father to the local auditorium to watch the great boxing matches of the 70s. They projected the fight live. I am pretty sure my chances of lung cancer increased many fold as a result.

Roy Jones Jr., 1988. That answers everything.

This controversy over boxers with male chromosomes being allowed to fight as women may end it as an Olympic sport.

And unlike wrestling - where the US teamed with its mortal enemies Iran and Russia to keep it in the Games - boxing may not have as much support.

This. That man got fricked over 12 ways to Sunuday. I don't think the Korean boxer landed one clean shot on him the whole match.

This year has been extremely bad about only showing swimming, gymnastics, and track and field in the primetime spot.

Record before 4 PM and after 11

The other problem NBC has is giving spoilers before the primetime broadcast. At least give us a warning NBC.

What happened to Cuban boxers? They were a force back on the day.

I remember 1976, when almost every match was televised, especially the gold medal matches. That was the heyday for me. We had Sugar Ray and the Spinks brothers winning gold, and Cuba had Stevenson. Everyone wanted to see a professional match with Ali vs Stevenson, but Castro would not let that happen.

Also Riddick Bowe won a silver. Lost a controversial match to Lennox Lewis.

They delisted 3 core sports including boxing. Of the 3, only Boxing has not been left in limbo. With this controversy I think it's done.

It used to be on the level of swimming and T&F but if you were to ask someone who watched boxing in the 80s, that '88 Roy Jones fight is when the sport states going downhill. (Figure Skating has somehow survived a ton of similar judging scandals.)

So right now you have what can only be known as the chromosome boxing scandal. On top of that you have in fighting of boxing organizing bodies. Then add the awareness of CTE/brain injuries. Over the years the IOC has gotten rid of a lot of sports as times changed. I don't think Boxing will ever come back from this.

Probably not.

It's also the only direct competition sport (two people directly compete in a ring/square against each other) that has the potential of being determined completely within the ring (KO) or by subjective judges (Decision) or by ref (TKO). Almost everything else is purely judged or by strict scoring rules that are easily confirmed.

It's weird that something as straight forward as boxing has so many subjective rules to it, but that's just how it is.
