First, it’s not a sport

Second, there are way too many variations. Oooh yay let’s do a 100 meter and a 150 meter and a 173 meter. And each one gets like 18 different stroke types. Then double it for every gender. Then double it again for relay versions.

Third, final medal tallies are skewed by just a couple of good swimmers

Fourth, it’s measured in meters

Fifth, it’s on all the time and takes away from better events. And it’s boring. And the commentary is boring. “Oh Linda look! He did a swim!”

Swimming gave us possibly the single greatest or 2nd greatest moment in American Olympics history

I mean, it’s 2024. You can watch any event you want on streaming.

Go try to swim even the length of a pool and tell me that swimming isn’t a sport. I’ve seen some stupid, moronic takes on TD over the years but this might be an all timer. That’s like saying running isn’t a sport

Please give us your definition of a sport PLUS 3 examples that are included in the Olympics

That's one hell of a reason. Welcome to the world.

Swimming isn’t a bad sport, but it needs the Olympic context to be relevant. No one is watching the World Swimming Championships as a standalone event, and it won’t make the news if someone breaks the WR in the 200 m. breaststroke at some random meet.

You could say that about almost 98% of all Olympic sports. Yet, that is what makes the Olympics so awesome. We get to see athletes who had dedicated their lives to random sports that we typically don't see very often.

I personally don't care all that much about Olympic basketball, because we have the NBA. It was different when we put amateur athletes up, but we don't anymore.

Curling is awesome, but I would never have known about if it were not for the Olympics.

Two events per stroke (100 & 200m) and then the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500m freestyle. Plus the 400 free and medley relays.

This is different than Track and Field?

Well, this is kind of the world standard.

You could. But the OP mentioned swimming. Most of the sports we discuss on this board don't need the Olympic context to be relevant. Most Olympic sports are only interesting for a couple of bites in novelty form.
