The city entered the competition as a dark horse, being up against stiff competition.
The other stunning part was that we got the Games just 12 years after another U.S. city (L.A. in '84) hosted. That'll likely never happen again.

Athens faced numerous obstacles, including "political instability, potential security problems, air pollution, traffic congestion and the fact that it would have to spend about US$3 billion to improve its infrastructure of airports, roads, rail lines and other amenities". Athens would later be selected to host the 2004 Summer Olympics seven years later on September 5, 1997.
And those Olympics ended up contributing to the financial collapse of Greece.

I think most major cities in the US could handle the Olympics. While we may bitch about infrastructure in certain cities, the situation is probably much better than in places like Rio or Athens.
Besides L.A. and Atlanta; New York (2012) and Chicago (2016) actually put up solid bids that were undone respectively by local politics (James Dolan fighting the West Side Stadium proposal) and a pissing match between the IOC and USOC over TV revenues.

Did they have Marta at that time or built for the olympics?
At the time of the Games, most of the existing MARTA rail system was operating (the first part of the system opened in 1979, long before Billy Payne got the idea of an Atlanta Olympics in his head). The North Line from Lindbergh to Dunwoody opened the month before, and was expedited from a late-1996 opening in order to make is usable for the Olympics.

100% spot on ….. 10-K Thirst Quencher was also a corporate sponsor along with their parent company DS Waters based out of Atlanta. This pissed off Gatorade because they wanted to be a corporate sponsor. This was NEVER going to happen, even if Gatorade offered billions. Why ? Because Gatorade is owned by Pepsi.

This writeup on how Atlanta won the bid is a great read.
That clears things up a bit. I don't want to use the term "second tier city", but again...in 1996 Atlanta didn't compare to NYC, LA, Chicago, Bay Area, or even Houston in terms of population and presumably, reputation and ability to host the event.
My biggest question that the article sort of cleared up would be: how in the hell did the USOC settle on Atlanta? It seemed like a throw-away bid that happened to win, a huge upset indeed.
The article said that Atlanta was the 36th largest US city at the time. If you use metro numbers, the current number 36 in San Jose, below Nashville and above Virginia Beach/Norfolk. Ironically enough, Atlanta's city proper population ranks 37th.

Prologe: He wasn't invited to my wedding. The baws came up from Mississippi to be my groomsmen. I was friends with him on Facebook less than a year before I had enough of the Barry bullshite. Still bit pissed that we never traded back items. I kept a shitty SI Football highlight VHS and he got my copy of Mike Tyson Punchout.
quote:I think it was a number of things. LA had them the decade before and Utah was ramping up for the winter bid. Chicago had/has a horrible equity issue with people being carried out of their hot apartments in body bags and the lakeshore/I-94 corridor hasn't been gentrified yet. (The projects were in the other side of the freeway from the White Sox park and they're were a few incidents of shots into the park.) New York is something I don't know. Frankly it could come down to one of their main sponsors (Coke) putting their hand on the scales on with the USOC (who decides which city gets our bid). Very similar to Rogue screwing over Chicago. Chicago '16 only had to get past the 1st round and they would've had the votes. Like this gay/green shite, they went with Rio because it was a "first".

One final thing. JA-S did not run the cleanest ship. When it came to SLC they didn't make much of an effort to keep things fair. I wouldn't be surprised if money/contracts flowed from the state to the USOC. You've got to remember that we are in a somewhat lengthy period without a summer games. LA '84 was a necessary thing after '80 went to Moscow.

In Buenos Aires, you wouldn't be having too many vegetarian meals....so that is a big plus right there.
But really, BA and Australia in late August, early September would be ideal weather wise....although Melbourne still can get a little cold in September.
For as much grief as CA gets, LA is a damn good spot as well.
I went to the Barcelona Olympics in 92 . For me, it was all positive. Location on the Iberian Peninsula, at night it was downright comfortable. The venues were spaced out pretty good. The locals were happy you were there, you felt safe on the streets

Denver, because of the altitude, would be very tough on distance running.
Similar to Mexico City in '68.

Hartsfield is no closer to downtown Atlanta than Chicago is to O'Hare. For flights to other parts of the country they could use Midway which is in the city itself.
Hartsfield feels a hell of a lot closer IMO. The chicago airports are not far i agree, I agree. looking it up Hartsfield is 9 miles to Mercedes bens stadium and Ohare is 16 to the loop and midway is 13 to the loop.
I'm simply pointing out though that there's a lot of airports that are a good distance from downtown such as Paris, Munich, Heathrow, Sea-Tac, etc.

Huge international airport
Airport, downtown, and main sporting venues were all extremely close together for a city that size.
This ^^^^
Venues nearby, but outside of the Metro Atlanta area included:
Florida Citrus Bowl - Orlando, Florida - Soccer
Golden Park - Columbus, Georgia - Softball
Legion Field - Birmingham, Alabama - Soccer
Ocoee Whitewater Center - Ducktown, Tennessee - Canoeing (slalom)
Orange Bowl - Miami, Florida - Soccer
RFK Stadium - Washington, DC - Soccer
Sanford Stadium - Athens, Georgia - Soccer
Stageman Coliseum - Athens, Georgia - Gymnastics/Volleyball
Wassaw Sound - Savannah, Georgia - Sailing
That being said...I never agreed with RFK for soccer...I thought they could have gone to Auburn, Knoxville, or Gainesville and had an awesome venue that would be much closer to Atlanta than D.C.

Pretty much. Atlanta’s domestic competition was the Twin Cities.

This is complete revisionist bullshite. No one gave a frick about Georgia being a "confederate state" when the selection was made in 1990. Try finding a single article from that time frame stating it was an issue.

And Billy Payne, Andy Young, and Maynard Jackson (RIP) were the main cogs behind Atlanta getting the Olympics.
The craziest part was the two most internationally famous Georgians at that time, Jimmy Carter and Ted Turner, were pretty much enemies of the IOC.
Carter led the boycott of the 1980 games. Turner created the Goodwill Games, which were never very popular, but took away some of the unique flavor of the Olympics.
I never thought Atlanta would win until the moment it was announced.

Atlanta was named after Atalanta, a figure from Greek mythology famed as a huntress, wrestler, and runner.
Atalanta is a rare strong female figure in Greek literature and she appears frequently in Greek art in scenes showing her renowned hunting and sporting skills.
"OH no! Greek Mythology is woke! They are total DEI! " blah blah blah

Not really. Atlanta has the airport and that’s it. Downtown sucks. It isn’t walkable. There isn’t many entertainment options / restaurants / bars. Public transportation isn’t great.
