One of his two Golds was because the Korean slipped.

Did I miss something about Apolo where he let "us" down?

No he had a gold stolen from him in SLC because he was pulled down during the final turn when he was in the lead.
He won a gold in SLC from a semi-questionable interference call on the winner. Koreans gave him death threats over that.
He won another gold in Torino.
If you want to talk overhyped short track speed skaters the answer is J. R. Celski who was supposed to take over after Ohno retired.

Lindsey Vonn was supposed to win a bunch but she only won one.
And then there's the infamous Dan & Dave Nike ad campaign.

Mary Decker, in the 1984 games.
Was the world champion in the 1500 and 3000 in 1983, heavily favored to win the 3000 in Los Angeles.
Then… the Zola Budd incident.

Good one. Another I remember from '92 is Kim Zmeskal.
She was the three-time US national champion, gold medal favorite in the all-around, and was expected to collect multiple event medals. She was getting pushed as America's next Olympic sweetheart.
She only ended up with one bronze from the team competition, and finished 10th in the all-around. It was quietly reported after the Olympics that she was injured the whole time.
