Right. Most of it wil get cleaned and there wil be some left. No major damage and certainly not long lasting. Watch how it plays out.

If you don't know what happened in Santa Barbara in 1969, and if you haven't read about what happens to the eco-system or the economy, both in actual impact and psychological impact, you shouldn't be telling everyone to calm down.

What good does it do for JN to do that?
PR and to bring some political pressure. The BP office on Hwy 311 in Houma has pretty much turned into a command post for the efforts. Bet you could cut the tension in the offices there with a knife.

There is oil constantly coming out of the ground, no one knows exactly how much and for how long it will continue.
For someone to say "its all going to be all right" is kinda premature.

I just got back from the BP staging area at the Boothville Venice High School in Boothville. There were about 1000-2000 volunteers gathered inside and outside of the school (WWL reported that only 300 were there - a gross underestimate). Most people were inside the the basketball gym watching a BP orientation film (it seemed like it was more a promotional piece than an educational one). I signed my contact info for volunteering, as did everyone else there I assume. I couldn't really figure out what was going on so I decided to stick my head into a few interviews that were taking place outside. A BP spox (some Brit, I didn't catch his name) told reporters that they put down a quarter million feet of boom this morning and that another quarter million was being staged at the moment. He said that they were not planning on putting out any more boom today but then he was corrected by some lady who said that they were - not sure who to believe. He then said that all volunteers needed to have HazMat training before they would be allowed out in any boats and that they were not starting HazMat training until tomorrow. Doh!!! At this point, I realized that my trip had been pretty futile and decided to leave. As I was leaving, I noticed that a lot of other people were leaving too. The BP spox said that they would be calling people up but I'm not holding my breath at this point. The staging area was a bit of circus. I've pretty much decided that I'm not going back down there if they call me. I've made some calls to some people in St. Bernard in hopes that they have their shite together a little bit better. Hopefully they'll call back soon.
I drove over four hours and burned a vacation day for this.

In other news, LSUTANGERINE is about the most anti-LSU "fan" I've ever seen. The SEC rant has better things to say about us.

Tang - i am on the opposite side of the spectrum than you, but I hope you are right.
But I dont think South La will ever be the same if this thing isnt stopped soon. And the experts are saying 2-3 months? Dont know how you can say that? YOu ever seen any documentaries on the Exxon Val. disaster? Oil is still on the coastline for hundreds of miles. And the marshes are going to take it even worse.

Quick questions:
How long do they estimate before they attempt the "dome"?
Are they already using skimmers anywhere or is this the type of oil that they wont work with?
And I assume they will attempt the fires after the sea calms down again?

Hows about 50,000 barrels per day?
Yes it s the worst case scenario.
From the article:
quote:
"The loss of a wellhead, this is totally unprecedented," said Gouget. "How bad it could get from that, you will have a tremendous volume of oil that is going to be offgassing on the coast. Depending on how much wind is there, and how those gases build up, that's a significant health concern."
I thought this was made public knowledge yesterday but apparently it was not. I find it rather strange that a major media outlet didn't publicize it first.

None of those questions were asked in the interview I saw. Sorry.

I guess the oil and gas industry has learned nothing from the last 50 years in the Gulf of Mexico
