The ROV they will be using has its own hydraulic pumping system. The tool operates off of 10,000 psi of hydraulic pressure. Our tools are used offshore all the time and many are designed specifically for use on BOP's (This tool is more of a multipurpose tool). Dive companies use our tools all the time but they operate using hose reels and pumping units above the surface.

I hope it works because my trip to Grand Isle in July isn't looking very good right now.

The tool may not come back but the commission on the replacement tool will be enough to put food on the table this month.

Look at the trajectory model I posted... if that validates then Grand Isle is relatively safe.

So the only real problem is a lack of proper torque to turn some bolts?

I don't think this is the problem. If that was the case they would have called right after it happened. I'm assuming that they are going to breakout the bolts repair the BOP and then retorque them.

I have visions of them trying to break loose these bolts and the ROV spinning round and round because it does not have the mass to be stable running this wrench.

Is there anyway they can use a bomb or directional charge to seal the well? I understand that at 5000' feet we're talking tremendous pressure, does that render any conventional explosive useless?

No just mud under the well. If they blew the BOP off at the ocean floor the well flow would be unrestricted. May make the problem worse.

Even if the hole was covered, the pressure from below would push the mud out and open the hole back up

I had the same vision. It would be interesting to watch.

I'm sure it's already in the works but the fisherman that will sue will never see the money in their lifetime. Due to the economy, high fuel prices and imported seafood, there just arent as many fisherman that do it as a primary source of income.

But the commercial fishers, aren't they LA-based?

For the moat part yes, but Ms and Al have quite a few as well.

FYI...There are just as many Commercial fisherman from Grand Isle to Cameron that will be just fine as there are from South Pass to Mobile that may or may not be affected.
