Why the hell does the ROV look like it's trying to tie a knot in that rope? A knot????

If i was the ROV operator and had these retarded BP @#$% giving me retarded "tie this thing here" instructions i'd slap somebody

the housing that is holding the "diamond rope" is pretty much exactly like that. At least that is what i can relate it to for everybody.

I was under the impression it was a big version of this with diamond coating on the blade.

That doesn't seem fundamentally different than an engine belt to me. It's a flexible thing going around some pulleys. Either way, you're not going to replace the belt/blade under 5000' of seawater.

We have gone a 112 pages of this thread without it getting trashed with BS. Let's keep it that way. I am not in the mood for banning people this afternoon.

Back on topic. They are trying to get the safety latch on the hook released so the sling can be removed.

it has been settled Fred.

Is the blade like a rope or a flat bandsaw blade?

More like a rope. The cutting direction of the band saw is perpendicular to the plane of the pulleys. The cutting direction of the wire saw is in the same plane as the pulleys.

Didn't know there was such a beast as a rope/wire saw.

Wire saws for cutting stone or other hard material are known in which a cylindrical cutting element is fixed to a wire rope or cable. The wire rope is pulled across the surface of the material to be sawn, so that the cutting elements abrade the surface along the line of the rope.

There's an interesting poster on Volnation giving updates:

quote:

Ok.... the diamond wire got stuck in the cut. We spent several hours trying to work it free or get it restarted. Those efforst included, at one point, reattaching the shears to the cut end of the pipe so we could readjust the sling angle on our A&R winch. About 1/2 hour ago, the decision was made to cut the diamond wire blade and recover it, along with the shears, to surface. We'll replace the diamond blade and also configure the shears for a horizontal cut. Then, we'll send the shears back down and cut the riser right below the kink to get all that extra weight off the pipe. Ultimately, we need a really clean cut on the riser because the latest version of the top hat is designed to actually seal on the riser so we can contain 100% of the flow. So, after the shear cut is complete - we'll come back with the diamond wire and clean cut it. When I get time - I'll read through and reply to any questions that I don't have time to do now.

To add to that, I think I remember reading that there are multiple "hats" to choose from in case one design doesn't work, with different designs having greater or lesser potential for capture.

ETA: so these efforts right now aren't leading up to an all-or-nothing attempt on the cap, as was the case with some of the previously attempted methods.

The cut (how clean) will determine which top hat they use. Some are ready and other designs are still being fabricated right now. Forward thinking by BP like it or not.

Just please back off and let's stay on point on this board.

The motherfrickers operating these ROV are the best in the entire fricking world at what they are doing. You watch a 10 minute clip and see one damn mistake and now you are ready to talk about their abilities? You piss every day of your damn life and still sometimes you hit the rim or floor. AND THAT IS TOUCHING A PART OF YOUR OWN BODY THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF AND HAVE FOR MANY YEARS AND CAN FEEL ON BOTH ENDS (hand and cock).

these guys are controlling these ROV's in darkness, currents, latency factors, and have no physical "feeling" of the objects they are touching and moving.

If I missed something or am off base, I apologize in advance. But if I read so far what I think I read about you criticizing the abilities of the ROV operators, then please STFU and GTFO. The type of agilitiy and precision they have displayed under these conditions is simply amazing.
