With respect, I don't think rooting for the success of the efforts and the people working to cap this thing equates to being a big oil lackey or a support of the oil spill or any particular corporation. I just don't see what is gained at this point in this disaster by having the attitude some of the "questions" here suggest.

And with that I will hold my tongue.

Based on the way this thing is going, I don't think he is going to hold on to that record for very long.

I guess you don't know what hyperbole means.
Here ,let me help you out.

quote:

Hyperboles are figures of speech that are exaggerated in order to create emphasis or effect. Hyperbole is a literary device often used in poetry, and is frequently encountered in casual speech. On occasion, newspapers and other media use hyperbole when speaking of an accident, to increase the impact of the story. This is more often found in tabloid newspapers, which often exaggerate accounts of events to appeal to a wider audience.

Why is there a lag time on the ROV? Well first of all they are controlling it from 5,000 feet away. They have to first wait for the video feed to reach them on surface then they have to feed the controls back to the ROV based on the video feed from 5,000 feet away.

I understand the distance to the ROV and it is minimal. I'd be shocked if they dont have fiber optics, and even if they don't, standard cables can send video and controls near instantaneously (milliseconds) with ease.

A reel of what, saws? If you mean "blades" then I want to know just how they lower that "blade" to the saw, splice it and then install it on the saw that is 5000 feet from them using a ROV.

Simply put, you are full of shite.

Ok, buddy, I apologize for coming on a little strong there.

I have watched these dudes on the ROVs since they started broadcasting, and I have read the reports of what they have accomplished. It has been pretty amazing.

The ROV's video feed has to be transmitted by cable to the ship. From their the feed is being transmitted by a satelite signal (which has a certain amount of latency) and then sent to a server where it is being rebroadcast for all of us to watch.

You are clearly right. I have deleted my comments. Sometimes the strain of all this exhausts my limited resources of maturity.

The dimond saw is put on at the surface. It is a homemade tool. It is like putiing on a belt in your car. It has the same type of pulley system. so you can eat it. I have seen one in real life

As for whether they have a backup saw, I'm pretty sure they do. However there is a limited amount of lift capacity (cranes) on the ship. So I believe they keep a ready spare on deck at all times. If the one downstairs breaks, they haul it up and send in the backup while they fix the other one.

the housing that is holding the "diamond rope" is pretty much exactly like that. At least that is what i can relate it to for everybody.
