I haven't seen any saw new or old since it went to the surface. Could have missed it though.

According to WWLTV, the saw has been freed from pipe.

per cnn, diamond saw no longer in play. likely going back to shears for rest of cut. top hat still considered a viable option.

How on earth can they seriously consider this an option after they crush the remaining riser pipe with shears?

This makes no sense. Why not repeatedly reposition the bandsaw around the riser cutting a few inches each time. Eventually, you will have a relatively clean cut.

According to the history channel they are waiting on Shelby Stanga the swamp logger.

I'll believe that when I see it. That would eliminate the possibility of doing what they have been talking about doing.

I think they are going to cut the riser off with shears to take the weight off, then do a good cut with the diamond saw.

I'm starting to think that the swamp logger might have more common sense.

(No offense to swamp loggers)

I'd hoped and prayed it would not come to that!

Stuff I have read says they use the shears of doom to cut off top part of riser, then make a good cut on what it left -- without the problem of binding because the weight will be off -- with the diamond wire saw.

Makes sense, I suppose. But, did it bind because of pipe weight or becasue of the oil flow bending the band upward as it passed through the flow? I think it was more flow thus they will get the same result.

Not following you. Seems like flow would take the bind off. I must be missing something.

I'm no engineer. Many of your guys seem to know a hellofa lot more about this than me.

My thought is that the blade would curve from the flow hitting it as it passes through the riser pipe. It will be cutting in two places and had about a 20" gap in between and that it's getting hammered with flow.

Saws don't work worth a damn when the blade flexes.

1. Media are a bunch of idiots, probably have the story wrong.

2. If the flow put it in a bind then just make a number of partial cuts. This way the saw wire is never to far in the pipe.

3. If the shears are to be used exclusively then this will be the first decision on the well that I think they are really srewing up on.

Wish they would hurry up. The long delay makes it look like the news report might be right.

If I'm not mistaken, the blade on this cutting device is more like a rope than a band saw. If this is the case, then the curvature caused by oil flow may not matter.

Agree with you completely, except for one small point: they will have to go into the "flow" to cut the drill pipe inside the riser.
