I called a dive shop I use down there and they said it was pretty much "hour-to-hour" and that there was a very large slick 40-50 miles long and 5-6 miles wide heading in. This was at 8:30 this morning. They expect it to arrive today and pretty much put a hurt on the beach and waterway out to around 10 miles.

From Karl Denninger, a resident of the Destin area:

How much further do we let this go?

quote:

https://liveblog.freedomblogging.com/ . This was an emergency Destin City Council Meeting this evening. If you've had a few stiff drinks or want to throw up, read the entire thing at the above link. Note a few things:

* The Mayor of Destin was on CNN yesterday (yes, yesterday) saying that "all is well, there's no oil, come play in Destin." Today, well, you judge from the below and transcript (click the above link) how much panic there is.

* Lt. LaGuardia said the county will face federal charges if they block off the pass. There you have it - a federal official from the USCG threatening local and county officials with federal charges for protecting the inland waterways and acting to close STATE waters. So much for state sovereignty - are we a federation of states or a Kingdom under Washington? Now let's be clear. They intend to try to "boom" the pass, but here's the kicker and admission: Wants to know if the booms will hold in place, since they have not held in place anywhere else. “How can you tell us they are going to hold here,” he asked.

Campbell said the setup they are using, utilizes a new angle that will work with the currents.

He said the magical number to use is .7 knots, if the currents are greater than that the oil will make its way under the boom. Currents in the Destin Pass run 3-3.5kts both flood and ebb. Congratulations jackass, you know damn well it won't work as the current runs at five times the maximum that can be stopped by boom. Now let's add a few more things. There are reports from fishing boats of mile-wide and eighteen inch thick oil mats 5-7 miles offshore - headed here. That's bad.

Lots more at the above link. Transcript of last night's meeting at second link.

Good news from Okaloosa County officials.

They say "FU" to the feds and will do whatever they think is necessary.

Good on them and its about time somebody said it.

Okaloosa Defies Unified...

quote:

Okaloosa County isn’t taking oil spill orders any more. County commissioners voted unanimously to give their emergency management team the power to take whatever action it deems necessary to prevent oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill from entering Choctawhatchee Bay through the East Pass. That means the team, led by Public Safety Director Dino Villani, can take whatever action it sees fit to protect the pass without having its plans approved by state or federal authorities. Commission chairman Wayne Harris said he and his fellow commissioners made their unanimous decision knowing full well they could be prosecuted for it.

Some little town in Mississippi did the same thing ... do it now ask for permission later. This was a small town I think of about 1000 people trying to do something ... volunteer fire dept had come up with renting 9 barges lining them up to form a "barrier" and putting what looked like 3 sets/strings of booms in front AND behind the barges ... so basically 7 layers of protection.

Cost ... $6000 per day.

F'em all. To those actually DOING something

Words do nothing. Obama's words last night? Did anyone who watched that corporate whore feel any better when he wrapped up?

Does he have a plan other than to let BP continue with their misrepresentations and keystone cop antics?

Even the left leaning MSNBC was trashing the speech afterward.

The truth sucks. Defending BP becomes harder every day (although there are many here who continue to do so), and swallowing the bullshite coming out of the .gov and BP likewise gets more difficult with each passing day.

Waiting around for someone to save you is foolhardy and it heartens me to see some Americans taking a more traditional American response. Rolling up their sleeves and doing something rather than hanging on the words of those who haven't done much of anything except cover their own asses. Or waiting for approval from an entity who's primary mission is to represent corporate interests.

Feel better? I feel worse if anything. What the federal government has do is make matters worse. There is no reason to shut down recreational fishing throughout most of the state other than where it would potentially interfere with oil operations. The fish aren't hurt and the fishing ban is simply because they don't want anyone to get a fish that might get contaminated when it is pulled from the water through the oil to cause it to have a bad taste if it wasn't wiped off properly. No health hazard yet lots of the state waters are closed.

Offshore waters south of cocodrie have no oil and haven't for many days yet the area is still closed.... even after some of those state waters reopened. Ummm hey noaa there is no cleanup needed offshore. When the oil leaves it is gone. REOPEN THOSE WATERS!!!

The economy is in the crapper. Lets destroy the one part that is strong. Obama pledged to make us less dependent of foreign oil and is driving jobs over seas right now with the moratorium and when those drill rigs go over seas to find work they won't be coming right back just because it is now OK 6 months later. Ummm I am under a contract now in Brazil dumb arse. So we will now be MORE dependent on foreign oil.

He wants to push alt energy. That is cool, that is great nothing wrong with that. But unfortunately he is going to do it by not making it better but instead making it more competitive with oil by making oil and gasoline more expensive.

It is just expensive. All the countries that do the most with alt. energies are the richer countries. People that don't have extra money don't by solar panels!!! Countries that are poor or worse polluters because they can't afford the less profitable way of doing things the clean way! So if you want alt energy then we need to be richer not poorer.

I can't afford solar panels and batteries to power my house. I am not rich enough. Destroying the economy by making EVERYTHING more expensive due to high fuel cost and less good paying jobs means less people will be able to afford alt energy... so less will be spent on expanding it and invested it.

And I though Jimmy Carter was bad. He can't touch what Obama is trying to do right now.

Didn't watch a minute of that crap. Watched something with my husband and boys on discovery/history/learning channel ... whatever the hell it was it was better than watching THAT.

This country is screwed ... it's not what my grandfather, a pilot on D-Day, fought for ...

What the hell is going on??? Sure does seem like our own government who is supposed to be by the people, for the people, is acting like a police state and doing whatever they please even if it is negligently wrong? Is this really what the US has become????

Kudos to Destin for ballsing up!!! I love that place. BP fricked our backyard where we live and now where we go to play...

that sounds dick Chad, but I agree.... I'm just praying it can hold off until after the 4th. It's too late to change reservations and go somewhere else when you have 10 guys headed to get rowdy at Crab Island.

We voted yesterday and 8/10 were for sticking with Destin. C'mon winds out of the SE!!!

Was wondering the same thing Lester. I'm hoping they will put up some type of barrier to keep the oil of of the bay. There jetties already create a natural defense, so maybe they can use those and some other type of man made barrier to stop the oil from getting into the harbor and Crab Island.
