Rec. ball is all but dead, it's like inner city public schooling. There may be two kids on each team that can catch a ball. The rest of the kids are on tee ball level w/o any skills. If your kid wants to play and develop in baseball they have to play 'select' baseball in USSSA/Grand Slam.

quote:

Most of these kids won't play past high school

This has always and will always be the case regardless of playing rec. or select ball.

quote:

and the parents sign them up to play year round,

Most don't play year round and I agree it's not good for them to do so. Play other sports and stay in shape. Kids are too young to focus on one sport at that young of an age.

Can’t say I disagree. Problem is if your kid is decent (and I’m not talking about a gifted kid, just one with a little athletic ability) he or she will be miserable in rec league because the play is so bad. I wish things would return to the way it was where the really good kids played tournament ball and the rest played league but that won’t happen. Too much money to be made.

As an umpire, I love that these idiots are willing to pay me $50 cash per game. Get paid $50 to stand in the field, and scout out the travel ball moms. I’ll take it.

I am going to watch a "select league" game tonight, son of a friend's.

This will be my first.

Remind me to start an AMA thread.

The worst part of it is what these kids AREN’T doing when they decide to play baseball year round. Bogalusa has had a canoe racing team for teens for decades. They barely have any participation anymore because all the kids that are the active types are playing baseball all year.

It’s also a great way to to get your kid to hate the sport. So many friends of mine growing up had parents make them play baseball practically year round and they hate it with a passion now (and did growing up).

Not to mention repetitive motion injuries. And I'm not talking about pitchers, either. Some of these coaches just bang grounder after grounder after grounder to the infielders because that's all they know how to do. So you have SS's and 2B's arms dragging by the time they are 12 years old.

I bet the origination of this was some baseball coach baw married a chick running a dance studio, and she instructed him on the grift.

I’m guessing American Legion baseball (summer HS age baseball league, HS baseball play level) is dead.

Not sure about travel baseball, but my daughter is in the volleyball equivalent. Honestly, unless kids have natural, ungodly talent, it’s the only way to stay competitive.

Which is fricking insane for little kids. Kids should be able to try a bunch of different shite when they’re little instead of specializing at 9-10 years old.

I love baseball and would play it year around. The problem is the expectation to give tap some hidden talent rather than the love of the game.

Parents-aside, a subject unto itself

Those that play deep into summer in the south...

Miserably hot afternoon June/July games!

Highly dependent on weather, often long delays (lightning)

Travel time and cost

Had a lot of fun with the right team / families / coach
Had a miserable time with weather and time commitment
Baseball can be boring as chit for too much time, until it is not (and then it is awesome)
Tightly wound personalities are its fabric

It wasn’t about the money for me. It was basically being locked into a contract of what you are going to be doing every weekend.

The ironic part is many won't play past HS because they're playing year round.

I used to say the same thing. But it’s time with the family, building relationships with others, and good lessons for kids.

Sorry that I want a good bat for my kid. The problem is that there is no mid grade bat. It’s either Walmart special or the newest Marucci.

We are part of a team that plays from Aug to Nov. and Feb to may. 2 weekends a month and only one two day tournament. Per season.

My family and probably everyone else I know somehow manage to do this without travel ball.
