My great-great grandfather was a survivor of the Sultana in 1865. He lost his entire family and is credited with saving at least 30 lives. His family also lost $17,000 in gold in the explosion.

First ancestor on my dad's side that set foot in the US came from the Basque Country via Martinique and fought for the 10th Louisiana during the Civil War.

My grandpa on my mom's side is mentioned in Liebling's The Earl of Louisiana as someone Gov. Long regularly talked to.

Crazy/bizarre/comical family story:

In the Hammond area sometime in the early 1930s, my paternal grandfather shot and killed an organ-grinder monkey with a .38 revolver. It had just jumped onto my grandmother's shoulder and bit her, drawing blood. He then beat the hell out of the organ grinder.

My great grandfather kidnapped his future wife (my great grandmother) when she was 15 and playing piano in a saloon. He had just shot a guy that was cheating him at poker and she was the only person who was not a friend of his and so may have told the sheriff what happened.

ETA: She was a prodigy piano player who never had a lesson. She just started playing one day out of the blue.

My dad always said that his great uncle or some shite owned a machine shop that was the site where the Hunley was built. Of course they also claimed we were related to William Weatherford aka Red Eagle like every other redneck in south Alabama.
