Real rich people buy appreciating assets (real estate to rent, apartment buildings, etc) before they buy any depreciating liability (sports car, yacht, etc). The steady stream of income also buys rich people time to do what they want, when they want.

Whereas, poor people sell their time to a boss to earn some money, then when they get somewhat of a stash, buy depreciating liabilities to treat themselves cuz they've "worked so hard for it." Even poorer people charge on credit for liabilities before they even have a stash, rather just based on a steady but ephemeral paycheck.

Side note: George Carlin has a famous bit on our obsession with accumulating "stuff". Hilarious. Makes an indirect case on why being a "minimalist" may have some benefits, especially when moving.

The person telling you this shite is usually willing to stop them from controlling you by taking on the burden himself at no cost.

I wish you luck. But having "stuff" and having debt are not necessarily the same thing. The key is to have debt free stuff that adds value to your life and asset generating "stuff" that increases your financial freedom.

My dad lives sort of like this

He's actually reasonably well off but lives in a condo that he rents. He owns several rental properties but has a company that manages them. He has no TV, a couple of bowls, cups, utensils, etc, a computer, a recliner and a bed.

He reads, exercises and travels all over the world most of the time

There’s some truth to this.

Katrina destroyed a lot of my shite, and after getting over the initial shock I found it was a liberating experience.

The problem is it takes something forcibly removing your possessions, because people get, well, possessive.

Why is it you equate having things to debt? I have a few toys. No debt. I use them when I feel like it.

I don’t get this thread. What he frick else am I to do in life?

Like, why even work baw? Don’t be a slave to work.

I have a garage full of "assets" that are just collecting dust. Having to maintain these assets have become a liability on my time.
