My sister in law borrowed $2000 for a cross country move. She had been planning it for 2 years and apparently didn’t save jack shite before she moved in.
She asked us the night before she was supposed to take possession of her rental for more money to cover the deposit to move in
It’s been 3 Months and not a penny to be seen
Thank god
1) I had the money and
2) Dont need it back immediately
Don’t know what she would have done otherwise

Education costs.
And it just cost you $6,000.00
Your education, not the nephew’s.

At least the 6k could save you more in the future.
Cause you weren't smart enough to know not to lend money to family so you might have doubled down and lent them a down payment for a house or something bigger the next time.
Now you learned a 6,000 lesson and don't have to buy any gifts so really much less than 6,000. And you helped out your nephew so that goes a long way.

The cost of education is not free. You just learned that you bought a non-participating interest in a truck for your brother-in-law.

Why didn’t you directly pay the tuition?

A lot of passive aggressive pussies up in here. Don't just let it slide. PREPARE to not get anything back, but if it was clearly meant as a loan, I'd at least make my sister's life miserable for a little while before giving up like everyone on page 1 has suggested.

To be fair he might have not came out of pocket anything for new truck.
This is a cop out. Even if no down payment they signed up for monthly payments while shirking the responsibility for the debt to their family. Sadly, some people just feel entitled to others money especially their parents and siblings. I've seen deadbeats continue to bilk their elderly parents still working well into retirement age to make sure they have enough to confidently retire.

Why didn't you tell her to just get a student loan
Posted on 5/25/20 at 2:34 pm to 3morereps
It was a lovely gesture of you, but did you think something in her financial future was going to change such that she would come up with the money to repay you?
Posted on 5/25/20 at 2:37 pm to 3morereps
The details of repayment should be established and "signed" on prior to money changing hands. It ain't family it's a business deal when repayment is expected.

Why is she sending her kid somewhere she can't afford? People need to learn to live within their means, even if that means their kids can't go to certain schools. Maybe a school with cheaper tuition would have been a better route for everyone involved.

Did she get a Trump check ?

You could also file suit against her under breach of oral contract.
