Yeah - you have to have the big 3 - water, shelter and food before you can do a single other thing. Fire is your key to food, water and security, even in warmer climates.

If I knew, for a fact, I was going to an extremely cold climate, maybe I swap out the pot for a good sleeping bag, just to get me through a couple of nights - but I would have to improvise an implement to boil water and cook food, anyway - it might be easier to improvise bedding, so I still might go with the pot - assuming I had a few minutes to analyze it.

And desert would be tough because of food. If you're not a Bedouin, you're going to die in the open desert pretty quickly, anyway. So, a flare gun would replace the fire starter and the biggest thing of water I'm allowed would replace the pot. Quick rescue is your only hope there.

Hydrogen peroxide is useless unless you also have baking soda to make cool, foamy science experiments.

Fire starter
Cast net

You dummies taking a tarp don't know how to use natures resources for shelter

A water containing apparatus can be found, because humans are trashy and litter

Magnifying Glass
Modified Machete/Hand Axe
Metal Container with seal able lid

Admittedly I'll need some sunshine to make a fire...but sunshine's cheap and generally readily available.

Most experts go with fire starter and machete and debate whether tarp or metal pot would be next. I would put mosquito net in the running for third, depending on where I was being stranded. Bugs can eat you up almost everywhere.

Naked and afraid automatically adds metal pot on the newer shows. Most contestants pick fire starter and machete.

I used to be in the "wild" every day. This was pretty much everything I had:

Camelback
5" fixed blade knife
Folding knife
Compass
Benadryl
Ibuprofen
Electrical tape
Toilet paper
Fire starter
Rain jacket
Flagging
Maps

If I had to pick only 3:

Camelback
Fixed blade knife
Fire starter

Knife is the most important of all of those by far

Machete
A lot of people think this is a necessity because everyone on TV uses them. I will tell you first hand that they are a complete waste of time, energy, and resources. Never once did I carry one with me, and anyone who has worked in the woods will agree completely. They slow you down immensely and you will be exhausted hacking through stuff that could easily be walked through

Knife, something to start a fire with, and a fleshlight (it can't talk).
