knife, fire starter of some sort, a book on the area with pictures telling me what I can and cannot eat.

Get a bigger fixed blade knife. You ever tried making a fire starting kit with a machete? What about eating and cleaning stuff? When you can only use something for one purpose, it should not go with you

Both the knife and machete are better at certain things and worse at others. I would much rather scrape some kindling with a machete than try to cut down a small tree with a knife.
