Dig a hole 12 inches deep, put a layer of sand then river rock on the bottom, then build a circle with brick leaving air holes.

There are bricks made specifically for fireplaces/pits.regular bricks may work fine but there is a risk of fracture, crumbling, and even explosion if things go perfectly wrong.

Use fire brick and refractory mortar (Heat Stop 50 is a good option if you can find it) to line the inside. That’ll help keep the exterior brick/block from cracking in the heat.

If you have young children please be careful. More and more pediatric burns are coming from backyard fire pits. We've had several kids on the burn unit for fire pit burns from someone adding gasoline or lighter fluid to the fire.

I have an old gas grill. You can have it if you haul it away.

Build it with treated lumber so it won’t rot sitting in the weather!
