Yik-yak? How many social media sites are there?

Just saw some asshat made a threat toward TAMU on the site "Yik-Yak"??
This is a "get off my lawn" moment possibly, but damn. How many of these sites have legs? I know Facebook, reddit, myspace(dying), snapchat, tinder, Instagram . And I am probably missing a couple that I can recall if reminded.
Just curious.
If I'm on a social media site with 2000 members, what's the point?
I do not consider TD to be social media IMO as it is anonymous. Unless you want to throw your pics up here. Therefore any forums I don't consider social media.

there are dozens of websites like 4chan that allow "anons" to post anything and everything. Most users use a proxy so even if you try you can't easily get their IP. It's a problem that's impossible to stop.

I saw Yik Yak, liked the locality aspect, was interested in its 350 million dollar valuation and its Atlanta origin, and downloaded.
