Navy Capt. Michel Brandt has been relieved of command of the USS Somerset, an amphibious transport dock ship, the service announced Friday. Brandt was fired “due to a lack of confidence in her ability to lead the crew” by Rear Adm. Christopher Stone, commander of the Expeditionary Strike Group 7, according to the Navy statement. She was relieved Thursday.

Come on Navy, do better please. Are these "New Navy" officers getting any training or are we just checking boxes?

The only thing that matters is equity
Its worth losing a few wars as long as we make strides towards equity

Is this a trend? Has it always been like this? I imagine it’s a tough job and not everyone can hack it.

Exactly. China and Russia making sure our focus remains there.

I'm really trying hard not to resort to the age old saying that women don't make good leaders but damn in this instance they're making it really hard not to.

But hey, its been like 18 months since one of our Navy vessels ran into a slow moving merchant ship or caught fire at the dock, so maybe we're trending up.
Even though we can't get anything worthwhile built in less than like 8 years. And no, the incredibly useless LCS's don't count.

Seems like it is...And I don't think it's just that we have more media coverage of it nowadays.. The US Navy has a leadership problem. At least in one segment of their staff.

If we are to glean from this that women are not suited for command, we need to compare these decisions with every man that has been relieved of command. Or is it something special about women.
I've known a few female river pilots and they were first rate. My suspicion is that decisions of this kind are made on an individual basis.

Perhaps as a start the Navy should look to the river boat pilots ranks when trying to fill billets for female naval officers instead of where ever they have been looking.

Maybe she does a better job with backseat driving.

Putin and Xi must be terrified.
Whoever thought that was a good idea can go to hell.

I would think having a woman lead a ship full of sailors would be a disaster.
But to keep it neutral, do we know if women lose their command of ships at a higher rate than men? Do they have more crashes or other trackable problems?

Spoke to an air traffic controller over the weekend. The DEI nonsense extends to this and it's not a joke. Promotions are prioritized for women and people of color.

How many female skippers have been relieved recently?

People who hate America thought it was a great idea.

Who would have thought that handing Navy ship commands out like candy to undeserving officers (regardless of gender) could go wrong?
I served with a guy who ended up being selected to the Naval Academy and graduated in 1996 with a Degree in Systems Engineering (specific to the Nuclear fleet) and got his MS from MIT in Mechanical Engineering while in; so the dude is smart AF.
He retired in 2019 and never even sniffed a ship command, and had to serve a tour in Iraq. I never understood what a dual degreed Systems Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Commander would be doing in Iraq/Afghanistan. He retired with 22 years in because for him to move up to Captain he would have needed another year long Iraq/Afghanistan deployment to be up for advancement.
This chick was handed shite to check a fricking box.
And lack of confidence is code for her fricking one of her subordinates and getting caught.
