Haha, I had two teachers (one M one F) say something like "ugh, no breaks until October" when I was hanging out with them over the weekend.
I politely mentioned most of us wouldn't get any break of significance until Thanksgiving, as opposed to their week long breaks in October, November and a 2 week break in December, and they countered by saying "yeah but you can control your vacation."
True. Of course, it's unlikely I'll take 5 days at once at any point in the next year, much less get at least 5 full weeks plus a summer.

My wife is a teacher, therefore we have many teacher friends.
Maybe they complain to each other in private, but I don't recall any of them bitching online. Most are ready to get back to work and assume a routine again. My wife gets stir-crazy by the end of the summer.

Damn, looks like I need to move to LA to teach. My pay/benefits don't get even close.
There are a lot of shitty teachers. I think that any teacher that argues this is probably one of the shitty ones. And most of the teachers bitching are probably women that bitch about everything. It amazes at every in-service how dumb some of my coworkers are.
Just a heads up though, the quality of teacher is just going to keep going down. Most education programs are a joke. Had tons of people drop out of my biology program in college, they all switched to early childhood ed.
It is one thing for a profession to be respected but have low pay. When you have no respect, easy entrance and low pay you won't attract and keep as many good people. Over 50% of new teachers leave in the first 5 years.
I love my job and enjoy what I do. With my degree could I find jobs that paid a lot more. However I get to spend tons of time with my kids and I can actually help make a difference. Am I going to complain about heading back? Yep, who here doesn't bitch about vacation ending?

I said 48k minus stipends, over 50k with them added back in.
The lowest paid of those three is 47K to start. With an extra 1k for meeting all goals and being effective. Once you add in the stipends paid for professional development, trainings, and requests to host conferences... Boom 50k +

Both of my parents were in education for over 35 years; they didn't bitch about summer ending. Of course in those days, you could still control the class and have discipline.
I did a quick calculation just for shits & giggles. Assuming a starting teacher makes $45,000 yr, the school year is 180 days and 8 hours long that comes out to $31.25 per hour in the classroom. That's not really bad. I know they have to go to professional development days and a few days outside of class days but the 2 1/2 months vacation makes up for that.

I did the same calc with $45k. And $31.25 and hour is great. Let's be real, that's much more than the majority of young professionals start out with per hour.

I've got 5-6 teachers on my FB, some are in-laws and I've yet to see or hear one complain.

I think they're paid pretty fairly. TX teachers make in the 40-50s for only 9 months of work. That's decent money for a fairly easy to obtain bachelor's degree.
