Starting pay here is $35,000 and I don't know of one single teacher who works only eight hours per day. Most come early, stay late, and work evenings or week-ends. Most take summer classes which they pay for out of their own pocket and spend their own money for classroom supplies.
For a starting teacher, it works out to more like $15-$20/hour.

I think most teachers are 190 working days
Take 10 away for sick leave.
180 days = 36 weeks
They essentially get 16 weeks off per year.
Most people get 3-6 weeks off per year, so they are working about 20% less than other professionals

Most people with non-teachers job get two weeks paid vacation with 7 to 8 days in paid holidays. I don't consider sick days because teachers have those as well.

Yes, they work outside of school hours. Yes, they have to deal with little shits. I just think that if you extrapolate on their pay for the days worked to an entire year, it's a fair wage. Obviously not all cases are the same (inner city v suburb, etc.).

Teachers can also receive payment for hosting conferences and speaking. Anywhere from 300 to 2k per event. Usually a weekend.
There is money to be made if you're willing to get into the administrative side.

Because I'd rather spend my time making 4 to 5 times the amount. I don't think it's easy money. It's like working a part time job. I prefer to work hard and play hard.

depends on how much I have to do
some days I don't take a lunch and other I don't come back after lunch
I also carry a cell phone and laptop with me everywhere I go including vacation. My job requires me to be available at all times.
