We had a guy that would pass out in a conference room in the afternoon at least once a week. He eventually got himself fired for something else

Seriously dude? Thought you were some sort of exec there.

All managers have to deal w this at some point in time.

Sure, you have a few choices:
- confront him, letting him know you care and give him a chance to clean himself up.
-- HUGE con to this is you could make yourself a target in this crazy world
- Leave the guy an anonymous note to avoid the above con
- Go to his boss, make them deal w it
- Go to HR.

You must do something, this person is a liability to the company.

I had a lead Project Manager cut loose after I noticed him slurring his words a couple of days. Then I went into the project / war room after hours and he was passed out on the desk and I couldn't wake him. Luckily he was a contractor...was gone the next day.

Don't mess around w these situations.

Oh, you should totally try to get a man fired then.

I honestly have never felt like I had an employee drunk at work. I’ve had a couple of bi-polar employees that I wish that was the case. Only two people I’ve ever found a reason to fire.

Found out one of our project managers was drinking on the job and gave him a warning. We knew he had been in AA before but was doing good for a while. He stopped it for a few weeks after the warning but started back. Had to fire him asap. It was a job where you had to get on roofs, can't risk keeping someone around that will get you sued or seriously injure themselves.

You'd be a moron to tell HR about a drunk colleague who doesn't report to you.

His managers are paid to deal with job performance and behavioral issues. Let them do their jobs.

If a buzzed coworker is impacting your work product, document everything to keep out of trouble when the shite eventually hits the fan.

And if your management lets an underperforming drunk keep his job, it's time to find a new employer.

We live in the age of victimhood. Tread carefully.

What government agency do you work for that allowed this to happen and it took something else to get him fired.

In my career, I've only had one instance of a substance abuse employee. We had a very important job going on at a site where lots of people were watching due to a fatality that had happened a few months before on said site.

Our main safety manager decided one day to go to a vacant office area and set a little blanket hanging off the front of the desk and crawl under for a nappy nap. He was apparently on pills.
Someone walked in looking for him and heard him snoring. Homie was fired and escorted out immediately.

There was a lady that worked with a business we had several joint projects with. She was like a jack of all trades type of person, book keeping, accounting, project management etc…

I had quite a bit of interaction over phone and email with her. I was always super impressed by her.

I made a passing comment about hiring her away from them to a buddy that worked for that firm.
He said “ man, it’s crazy. Everyone knows she is an alcoholic, but she is so awesome at her job, we can’t get rid of her”

He said every single day at lunch, she walked across the street to the liquor store, and bought a bottle of vodka, and made a huge mixed drink and pounded it.

Apparently she hit high gear during second half of the day and got even better at her job.

So to the OP: keep your mouth shut. He is better at his job than you. Probably.

You go to his manager and inform him or her that you have a reasonable suspicion that the guy is drinking, tell them what you have experienced to cause your reasonable suspicion then go and mind your own business. If you want to CYA then document date, time and subject discussed just in case you ever have to be a witness

I don't understand getting involved when it doesn't involve you. 100% of the time its best to just keep your head down and worry about your department. If you see it from the outside then the people working with him daily see it too. It'll resolve itself....You don't want to be known as a snitch. It'll make other people not trust you.

Now if he's one of your employees you need to go talk to him and put him on notice. HR notification would be step two if he doesn't correct the situation. Only time you contact HR immediately is if you are trying to "coach" the guy out and document things.
