Unless you live in the ghetto or a farm at risk for wolves and stuff, an aggressive dog breed isn’t necessary anymore. If someone breaks into my house my dog isn’t doing anything but just laying there or walking away. I don’t even need that risk if a neighbors kid runs up to hug mine or play fight or something and then we have a disfigured child’s face on our hands. Stop getting dogs that were bred for this and get a damn retriever or Aussie shepherd or something

If you don’t want to get sued you better check your homeowner’s insurance. A lot of them have exclusions or limits reductions for dog bite cases.

had one put down for attacking someone we had working at the house. We had him in the back yard that had a 6 foot privacy fence. He was a Shepard mix

In Missouri a dog gets "one bite" and after that it is considered vicious subjecting its owner to liability. Check your state laws. Someone could sue your arse off.

it absolutely does matter. OP is an idiot tying his dog to the porch while strangers are around which caused this, but the breed is the deciding difference on aggression vs protection

We adopted a Rhodesian Ridgeback from a military family that was being transferred and they couldn't take her. She had spent most of her time alone in the back yard, didn't get a lot of socialization or attention. When we went in the backyard to meet her she was great. Brought her home and she was great - to our family. But she was violently aggressive to any other human or animal. I found a lady who raises and trains Ridgebacks, what she told me was that Molly had finally found a pack that loved her and that she loved and had become extremely protective of our pack. She said she could train and socialize her but before we could try that, Molly attacked a friend of one of my kids. She didn't leave teethmarks or do any permanent damage just bruises but, understandably, the kids mom called the police and we had to put Molly down. I loved that dog but she was more than likely beyond rehabilitation.

Couldnt do it.

But I would never own a pit.
I have seen people who resuce pits, get attacked bad by pit bulls.
I have had friends that have had dogs mixed with pits, they end up getting out and attacking someone.

You cant make it up.
Other countries have imported Pitts to other countries, and guess what fatal attacks from dogs increased.
People still are like "well, its the owner" blah blah blabh. Trying to defend the behavior. These people vote.

I would do what everyone else does. Surrender the dog somewhere and lie about its history for being aggressive.

Don’t you know dogs feel vulnerable leashed? Trapped. That’s why they say drop the lead if a loose dog approaches yours and starts up. Your dog was tied to your porch and your wife was behind him. And a stranger approached? Or someone who had been there before? My dog would not be pts for that. I’d question myself why I tied up my dog to my porch and expect all to be ok. I also know a strange dog/animal/person entering my yard would not fare well with my dog. It’s his breed, an LGD mix. He goes up if someone comes over he does not know, that I’ve invited in. If he has been properly introduced and knows them, he is a 100 lb puppy and friendly. If my dog ever gave me or my kids a side eye, it’d be a different story. Your kids will have friends over. You’ll need to prepare for that. You’ve had the dog 5 years and no issues with the kids. I see he’s a heeler. Herding breeds can be guardy. They also may chase your kids and nip your ankles bc it’s a herding breed thing.

In general I agree with you, but non aggressive friendly breeds can be overly aggressive as well. OP's dog was overly aggressive towards a stranger that was with his wife. Not an intruder. In this case I don't care if it's a Pit Bull or a Golden Retriever he needs to get rid of the dog.

What type of dog is it?

And anytime a dog shows any aggression with small kids around you get rid of it immediately.

They really arent. Ive had a lot of them. Some of them are relatively intelligent, but they are animals and not far off in the genetic coding from wolves and coyotes and hyenas and dingos.

There are good ones and there are liabilities. Theres no gray area. Dogs became useful through selective breeding and the bad ones necessarily have to go. None of you are kicking down doors in Afghanistan. An aggressive dog has no place in the normal civilian society and should be put down.

Sounds to me like it's time to take the dog to a shelter. Do it now before it attacks someone in your family.

Sounds like he needs to go "live on a beautiful farm with dogs just like him". At least that's the BS my mom told me as a kid about my lab that would chew anything in sight.

Exactly. This time it was an adult that could protect himself. What if next time it’s a neighborhood kid that just sees a dog and doesn’t know better?

I have a particular perspective on this you might want to hear.

Our neighbor took in a Shepard/Pyrenees mix. It wandered malnourished around their church for a couple of weeks and they brought it home. It was a kind gesture.

Their daughter is the same age as our youngest daughter and they played together. My little girl was 11 when she went over to their house to play. The dog had been nice but generally a bit too submissive. That was a warning sign. You’ve got a much more pronounced warning sign!

My daughter was playing with the neighbor’s kid one day and the dog just snapped. Opened her scalp up to her skull, ripped her arm open (about 1/4 inch below the brachial artery) and she had puncture wounds all over her chest and jaw. She only survived because she’s a little bad arse. fought it off and had the wits to sprint to the other side of their in ground fence.

After plastic surgery, and multiple visits to an eye surgeon to address the puncture wounds around her eye that affected her vision, their insurance offered us the max on the policy. Speaking to an attorney I could’ve sued them for 5-6 times their homeowners insurance policy. That would’ve surely ruined my neighbors. Me, my wife, and daughter didn’t want any part of that. So I told my neighbor I’d accept the insurance check.

Would you like to be at the mercy of some random person who is mauled by your dog? Put it down.
