I was in NYC last week, and I wanted an authentic NYC deli sandwich. I go into Hell's Kitchen to a deli, order me and my daughter sandwiches and leave because they didn't have any place to sit and eat.
On the way back to the room, we come to a bar and grill that has tables set up outside, 90% of them were empty. It was 2pm and it was half empty inside as well.
So we grab a two top, order a beer and a Coke. While the waiter was getting our drinks, we break out our sandwiches and start eating. The waiter comes back with the drinks and goes crazy. "You cannot sit at my table and eat food from somewhere else, we have food here!"
I tell him, oh well, down my beer and leave him $5 for the beer and didn't pay for the Coke. I told him I wasn't paying for the Coke because you won't let her sit here and drink it.

Now, if the place was packed, and there was only one table left, I wouldn't have sat, but they cut off their nose to spite their face.
We would have sat there, had a couple beers, cokes, maybe an appetizer, and dessert, instead my money went somewhere else.

I can honestly see both sides of this issue and have no advice to give.

Ehh probably not the smartest move to break out the food from somewhere else, but at least you ordered a beer from them. They probably didnt need to freak out.

Everyone on the OT is a poor waiter so expect strong condemnation of your actions.

Rude AND trashy. You could have handled it a lot more nicely and probably stayed.

I probably would have said the other place was packed, and now that I'm here I'd like to have a few beers and a dessert.

I can see why he'd be a little annoyed, but it really doesn't seem like something to go crazy about.

I like you as a poster and always have, but you were wrong. If that was your restaurant you wouldn’t want customers sitting at your table eating food from your competition.

Just poor taste really.

Sorry but you were in the wrong. I get that no one else was sitting down but they were THEIR chairs you were sitting in.

I would have asked the waiter ahead of time. Some places are OK with outside food, some aren't.

I can see both sides.

I mean, you're really surprised that a bar & grill has an issue with you bringing in your own food?

In addition to being poor form, it might be a health code issue.

NYC has different rules. If you want a true ruling you need to ask a group of assholes.

If they had a sign "NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINKS" you were in the wrong.

If they didn't have a sign - I would have sat there and made them kick me out.

ETA: I would have paid for the coke and the beer if I ordered them... but I would have sat there and occupied the space until I was finished with my purchases.

You ordered the Coke. You pay for the Coke.

If someone came to my shop and racked their car and started changing parts Id tell them to leave. IDK if I had every rack open this is a business not a public park.

Yes. You were very clearly in the wrong.

And you didn’t pay for the coke so you also stole. Wonderful example to set for your daughter.

Based on how cheap you came across in many of your TB threads about this trip, I’m guessing they didn’t miss out on much.

I agree with the restaurant in principle. It isn't as simple as you paid for a beer and a Coke so now you can do whatever you want at their table. Given its a sidewalk table in NYC they probably have all kinds of problems with people just squatting and occupying space and just ordering a coke. Also, food from other places looks bad for them and I can understand why. That said, given the lack of patrons, I probably would've let it slide if I were the waiter as long as you GTFO after eating because clearly you had no previous intention to go to them for the full range of services.

You have terrible communication skills. Should have stated your intentions before just breaking out food from somewhere else.

What you did is not OK even if an establishment is empty.
