If they could teach chimps to speak and read,
Every Christmas Eve, Hap Glaudi used to play a short video of chimps opening presents around a Christmas tree. It was a tradition just like Phil Johnson reciting the Gift of the Magi at the end of the broadcast.
WWLTV has actually gotten worse than when they showcased trained chimps!

Sheeba is still bangin. Who cares if she wears braids and curls?

The WWLTV of old is long gone. They no longer support, nor represent the culture of New Orleans, or South East Louisiana.
Currently, WWL is owned by Tegna; however, Standard General is attempting acquisition of Tegna. That deal is currently under scrutiny by the FCC. Should the deal go through, SG would be the largest minority owned, female-led broadcast station in the U.S. They are supported by non-other than the NAACP, Jessie Jackson and so on...
As wise man once said, "everything woke turns to shite" Case and point.

There's an anchor shortage because of the anchor-flu.

From the mid 80s until well after 2010 or so, you could make a decent argument that WWL TV was the single best local affiliate in the entire country. Their news was so strong they were able to tell CBS to pound sand when it came to the morning show. Their ratings were at least double the other stations.
Loyola owned it, then it became employee owned led by Phil Johnson, then it became owned by Belo. Belo knew what they had and kept the investment going.
They had decades of great journalists led by Phil Johnston and Mike Early. Many were offered national spots but only a few went. The Spirit of Louisiana campaign won every award you can think of. They have a room full of Edward R Murrow and Peabody awards.
Then Gannett / Tegna bought it, which are cheap to begin with, but treated WWL not like the best station in the country, but a station in the 40th or so TV market in the country. They went cheap and bland (Their prodution values are very similar to KHOU, etc). They are insanely cheap, so any good talent they get, leaves. Their chief meterologist was a castoff who was fired from Fox8 because he sucked.
It is a shame what has happened to that station.

This guy scared the shite outta me as a kid.
At the end of a broadcast, when Phil would come on, you knew he was chewing out our parents for something. You didn’t know what it was, but it wasn’t your fault. It was theirs.
I wish there was a way to go back and listen to some of those just to hear all the things he probably predicted correctly.

I remember him when I was a kid. Dry as can be but if I remember, he was conservative as hell.

New Orleans is considered a mis level market at best. Hard to find talent - pay and exposure.
