Jumbo Sherman, T34, Tiger or Panther

It is funny how the German tanks are seen as the best if they work properly just like anything German made today ie BMW, Mercedes Porsche

Panther. If Germany would have focused on just these they would have made alot more and it might have been a different story on Russian Front. But Hitler was enamored with Tiger and King Tiger

The Panther was such a pos. I guess if they devoted more resources it obviously could’ve been made more reliable. No doubt their design was great

Even as it was it was head over heels over the Sherman and T34 in both cases especially the T34 the russians had so many more they would even just ram Panthers to stop them they would have somewhere near a 4 or 5 to 1 advantage or more

Seriously though probably T-34. Great tank, mass produced, easy to handle. von Kliest and Guderian both said they were the best tanks in the field

All those German tanks were amazing “if ....”

The Sherman doesn’t need a qualifier and it won the goddamn war.

Battle of Kursk. Good story

Trying to find the story of the German tanker who took out a ridiculous number of Soviet tanks...can’t find it. Know I watched a YouTube video on it recently.

Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

What is “best” though?

Easily mass produced giving numerical superiority? Or one on one matchup? Hell, even one on several.

The Germans were notoriously good tankers. Overwhelmed by T34s but I don’t think that makes them better tanks than tigers or panzers.

I built probably 50 Tamiya WW2 tanks growing up.

I loved the jagpanther.

My favorite because of how it looked but the panther is definitely the best known.

The King Tiger was also badass.

Also being a geeky 14yoi played lots of this and loved overwhelming my friend with my massive German armored division.

And I still have this game. Man I wore those tanks out.

I guess today I would be turned in as a racist Nazi if someone caught me playing this.

1 on 1 there may have been some German tanks that were better. But if everything was 1 on 1 the Germans would have won. The T-34 was a good tank on its own with the sloped armor that stopped a lot of German shells and a 76-85 mm gun. The war was all about coming up something good and making as much as you can. The T-34 was also easy to use, so more soldiers could operate them. If you have a proven machine, keep using it until the enemy finds a way to stop it. And the Germans never stopped the T-34. If I was going into a large battle involving tanks, I’d want the T-34s on my side. They may not have been the best individually but they were good and mass produced which had a major impact on the war and helped the USSR win. It’s kind of an example of the war as a whole, where Hitler was constantly looking for wunderwaffen while the Allies just cranked out what worked. So yeah individually it may not have been the best, but I think it was in the context of the war.

Good point. Even the best tank commanders in the best tanks can be overwhelmed by superior numbers of inferior tanks. I suppose war has always been that way, in a land war. At least until gunpowder, where knights. Highly trained and expensive, the tanks of the medieval era, could be taken out by less expensive and less trained gunpowder units.

Same way that battleships were Kings of the seas until effective aircraft.

combine the Panther's gun and armor with the Sherman's speed and mechanical reliability, you've got a winner...

Napoleon has a great quote when it comes to quantity vs quality, "Quantity has a quality all unto itself." I cant thing of many more appropriate situations it can be applied to than German arms production during the Second World War.

Tiger. Donald Sutherland was way more afraid of them than he was Panzers.

Battle of Golan Heights

There’s a balance. Superior tech, power and operation can hold off a force of lesser quality, even if outnumbered, to a point. But eventually fast and cheap will overwhelm even the best.
