It would have been interesting to see what the Pershing could have done had it been introduced earlier and gotten some of the bugs worked out.

Trying to find the story of the German tanker who took out a ridiculous number of Soviet tanks...can’t find it. Know I watched a YouTube video on it recently.
Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

Without a doubt, the Germans had the best looking armor

T-34
Easy to mass produce, slopes armor resulted in greater protection, decent gun, tough as nails.

Firefly Shermans with the British 17 pounder were really effective

All those German tanks were amazing “if ....” The Sherman doesn’t need a qualifier and it won the goddamn war.
The Sherman was fast and reliable. It couldn’t actually kill a panzer. The gun wasn’t big enough to pierce the armor. And they were light (we were floating them across the Atlantic) which made them easier to kill

There were versions of the Sherman that most certainly COULD take on German tanks. The British Firefly and American Easy Eight with the 76.2 gun were very capable of taking on panzers.

Sherman was easy to produce and there were just so many more of them. They were great anti infantry tanks...which was ideal in WW2. Americans could crank them out and ship them easily. They proved reliable.
The German tanks would best it one on one. But the Shermans outnumbered the German tanks by an order of magnitude.

March of 1944, the US government inked a deal that would bring it some 254 of the modified Shermans to life to which the Ordnance Committee applied the designation of "M4A3E2" to the type - "E" signifying the type as an "experimental design". Production of the upgraded Sherman commenced at light speed to help get the armor up to the front lines as quickly as possible. By late 1944, the M4A3E2 was already being delivered into the eager hands of awaiting American tank crews and commanders in Europe. The new mount was christened the Sherman "Jumbo" by her crews to signify its improved, oversized stature.

The German Army was probably the best ever, when it came to the individual man, material, and tactics. Unfortunately for them, they had a maniac in charge.

The Shermans with the 75mm did kill Panthers, Tigers (both), Panzer IV’s, etc. but it was usually a matter of good shooing - all had side and rear armor that could be defeated at reasonable ranges - and superior numbers and better tactics as the war progressed. One of the Shermans’ benefits was how easy it was to service and repair. For example, Sherman crews could change the transmission of a Sherman in about a quarter of the time necessary to perform the same action in a Panther. Also, check out sometime how much of a bitch if was to change an internal road wheel on a Panther or Tiger I. In a Sherman, especially with the VVSS suspension, just unbolt the bogey assembly, bolt on a new one and then get back out there.
The T-34 went through teething trouble to find it stride, especially when it had the two man turret.

Any answer other than the T-34 is incorrect.

KV-2 until it was nerfed.
Now it’s the Smasher.

If the question is “which tank when placed 1:1 in an arena vs the other is the best,” then you’ll probably (definitely) get a different answer. But that’s not the way the war was fought. The primary purpose of tanks wasn’t to fight other tanks; it was to support infantry, knock out fortifications, move rapidly across battlefields, etc...
A major reason for the Allied victory was the incredible superiority the US had over its opponents in the “non sexy” advantages, and the Sherman M4 is a prime example. Its ease of production, ease of transport, and reliability were unmatched. A tank can only be any good when it’s available and operational, which the Sherman was inarguably the best at. And that’s why I’m saying it was the best tank of the war.
