First off, none of us have it as far as I know. But it’s having a pretty direct and profound impact tonight nonetheless. It started earlier today when my MIL had to call paramedics to take my step-FIL to the hospital because his kidneys have totally shut down. He’s 82 and frankly, I’m surprised he’s still alive. He’s in the final stages of congestive heat failure and just about everything has already shutdown. They’ve admitted him to ICU. His blood pressure is 80something over 40something and he’s very incoherent.

Because of quarantine rules in place, no visitors are allowed in ICU under any circumstances. Not only can my MIL not go back to his room, she can’t even remain at the hospital. They escorted her out of the building. Basically because of the Wuhan Coronavirus virus, my step-FIL will most likely die alone sometime within the next day or two. My MIL is beside herself.

Uh not to be mean but if he is that sick and feeble why even admit to ICU? Let him die in peace at home

That is horrible. So very sad and I’m so sorry for what your family is dealing with. No one should have to die alone, unless that is their wish.

My MIL is very old-school Southern Baptist lady. The thought of letting someone die, anyone, is foreign to her.

That sucks and I'm sorry to hear it.

I am always amazed at the discomforts and lack of significance given to events (like weddings or births, or as here, final days) during difficult periods in history (or sometimes just due to limitations of prior times). Getting a letter your dad died 6 weeks ago, etc.

I don't think we're going to experience that like those before us did, but unfortunately we're going to get a taste of how those things are mostly luxuries of modernity that we take for granted.

Once he was moved into a locked down ICU, could he even ever be moved out to hospice care without a 14 day quarantine?

I'm so sorry for your MIL. And I feel helpless for her. And for your wife.

All the ramifications of decisions made without looking at all the other ripple effects.

The two hospital ships that are being moved. But not ready yet. I think I heard they will be for 'regular' hospital needs, no Corona. But for now, there's nothing like that most places.

See if you can get in touch with a local hospice. They can bring him home and have a DME company bring a hospital bed, oxygen concentrator, and suction machine.

Thanks. We weren’t able to go because my wife did not want to risk me going there and getting infected or her going and bringing it back to me.

The worst part is my MIL said he was really confused and didn’t know where he was or what was going on. And now he’s there alone. That’s a terrible way to spend your last hours.

One other thing, my MIL was told by the hospital they currently do not have any Covid patients.
