The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly blasted the now ousted commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as "stupid" in an address to the ship's crew Monday morning, in remarks obtained by CNN.

Modly told the crew that their former commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, was either "too naive or too stupid" to be in command or that he intentionally leaked to the media a memo in which he warned about coronavirus spreading aboard the aircraft carrier and urged action to save his sailors.
The acting secretary accused Crozier of committing a "betrayal" and creating a "big controversy" in Washington by disseminating the warning so widely.
"It was a betrayal. And I can tell you one other thing: because he did that he put it in the public's forum and it is now a big controversy in Washington, DC," Modly said, according to a transcript of remarks Modly made to the crew, copies of which have been provided to CNN by multiple Navy officials.

Look, I understand if you felt the need to remove him from command. But what the hell are you trying to accomplish by blasting the CAPT like this, and to his sailors directly?

And "creating a big controversy" in DC? Well, deal with it. And what exactly do you think these remarks are going to do?

Oh, and a couple of days ago, when I asked if he had discussed the issue with the admirals?

quote:

Several senior military officials, including the Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday, recommended against Modly's decision to fire Crozier before an investigation into the matter was complete and in the midst of an evacuation, two US officials tell CNN.

Understand the source... but I'm guessing that speech actually happened.

People are leaking this transcript? Sounds like the Navy didn't do enough to stop this shite.

Yeah, when some civilian shits on your "beloved" CO, I guess some of the sailors feel the need to let people know about it.

Kind of a dick move on (Acting) SECNAV's part. Best thing he could've done was be quiet about the whole situation and put a filler in place until the proper relief showed up. Obviously the send-off by the Sailors showed they liked him, so the comments are kicking the command while they're down. Just a reminder the TR is essentially on deployment and not going home for another 5-6 months, setting a really awesome precedent to kick it off.

This guy will never promote again, which kind of sucks. Still, O6 retirement at 28 years is a very cush life. Only the uppers in that strike group know how much effort was put into their situation. It'll all come out at some point, just give it a few months.

The "civilian" is a Naval Academy graduate who flew helicopters. Not exactly an outsider to the Navy.

The Navy was acting. They had already removed 1000 sailors from the ship and were half finished testing. They had isolation protocols on the ship. A carrier is large enough to social distance. You cannot simply evacuate a nuclear carrier overseas as the captain proposed.

I did not say it would be easy but it is much more possible than most naval vessels. My cousin retired a few years back as a Fleet Master Chief and explained how they could do it.

The Navy is unequivocally the most fricked up of our nation’s military branches.

Chester Nimitz is fricking pissed at what has become of his Navy.

This whole situation is a cluster with no one exactly covering themselves in glory.

BTW, I am still awaiting an explanation on why this carrier was allowed to take port call and why anyone was allowed to step foot in Vietnam in the face of this raging pandemic. I want to know who made the call on that.

As someone who has done five deployments on various aircraft carriers, this was really funny. Kudos.

Isn't he basically doing the same thing as the Captain he ran off?

No. No it's not. I'm on one right now and pass roughly 2,000 people per day. We have maybe 5,200 onboard right now. Think about meals. Bathrooms. Watch stations. Everything. Not happening, don't care what your FLTCM cousin says

They are all nuts. It seems he said he fired him to please Trump. Adding to the controversy...

Obama did a number on the top brass making them partisans; and the Pentagon has been building up to be filled with call me Lt. Col. Vindman's for years.

Didn’t the Captain get fired because his letter was leaked to the media.

Modly is right, the captain was a pussy, and we don't need pussys in charge of warships. However, the way the Navy should have handled it is to quietly shuffle the carrier and the epidemic out of the news cycle, then transfer (not demote) the captain to a desk job, then let him wither there.

My son-in-law was a nuclear engineer on a carrier on which Crozier was second in command. He says Crozier was extremely well liked, and my SIL is in his corner. The thing is, the job of a captain is not to be well liked.

Was this guy drunk when he made this address?
