If that speech is true it's grossly unprofessional for any workplace and outrageous for the armed forces. Secretary of the Navy comes off looking like a petulant child.

Something tells me somebody smart enough to be a nuclear engineer already knows that and while he may like the captain personally, the main reason he is "in his corner" is he respected his professional competency, not because he introduced ice cream socials to the vessel.

Look, I understand if you felt the need to remove him from command. But what the hell are you trying to accomplish by blasting the CAPT like this, and to his sailors directly?

Setting a badly needed example to the rest of the Navy. Any idea how many ship captains have been relieved from duty in recent years? Apparently they are a thick headed lot.

No. No it's not. I'm on one right now and pass roughly 2,000 people per day. We have maybe 5,200 onboard right now. Think about meals. Bathrooms. Watch stations. Everything. Not happening, don't care what your FLTCM cousin says

In the case of this vessel they were down to under 3000 onboard at the point the Captain sent his ill-advised email. I did not say it would be easy but possible if the Carrier were docked. I also think Modly's comments were just as stupid. And the media has lied in headline after headline as the captain was not fired and kept his rank and pay.

Well, he’s right. The Capitan was stupid. You’d have to be stupid to not realize broadcasting via unsecured email to 30-40 people outside of your chain of command details of the operational status of your command is about the fastest way you can lose that command.

And if he was so damned concerned about his sailors, why didn’t he stroll down the freaking hall to the carrier group commander, his commanding Officer no less, instead of panicking and starting a completely unnecessary shitstorm?

Think people, use your freaking common sense. Is the Navy just going to allow a carrier task force whither and die? This isn’t some forgotten weather observation station in northern Greenland. It’s a freaking carrier task force. The Navy is going to do everything possible to protect the carrier group and keep it operational. This dude panicked unnecessarily and now he’s paying the price as he should.

I have been wondering this same thing since the story broke.

Exactly. It isn’t like he is Captain Kirk and his commanding officer is on the other side of the galaxy. His CO was literally a few doors down the hall from him.

Another question I have is was it the captain or the admiral of the group that authorized shore leave in Vietnam?

I'll have to search for the article but apparently the decision was made at the top levels.

Some diplomatic bullshite that had been planned for months and they were told it was still on.

Not the same article I saw but gives you enough of a picture about the decision.

When I was in (see Noah's Ark) shore leave was scheduled in advance through Fleet Command. The ship's captain had input for logistical purposes but it still had to be approved through the Command.

They both seem to be close to the same age so I wonder if these two have some longstanding beef going back to their days at Annapolis.

This shite got personal real quick. Were they at the Academy at the same time?

BTW, I am still awaiting an explanation on why this carrier was allowed to take port call and why anyone was allowed to step foot in Vietnam in the face of this raging pandemic. I want to know who made the call on that.

Perhaps because the Commander in Chief was downplaying the impact of the virus? And perhaps Navy decision making has been impacted by his propensity to install/promote sycophants and fire whistleblowers?

The culture of any organization comes from the top, down. This is the cost of a having a petulant child at the top.

When a lightbulb in your house blows or you run over a nail and get a flat tire, are those Trump’s fault too?

That’s a bad analogy. Those things are random occurrences and not the result of personnel decisions or the culture the leader cultivates.
