I was raised hard core evangelical protestant, but my wife has received a great deal of spiritual comfort during some really tough times from the Catholic church. Whatever their shortcomings, and I'm sure there are many, they're okay by me for that.

Nobody should be shocked at this. I mean, the Vatican has a 2,000 year old record that we can point to that is littered with this kind of behavior.

Not defending the catholic church or the pope here, they’ve done some terrible things over the course of history. But the current pope actually lives in a tiny apartment and would not move into where the popes normally live.

Imagine a government bureaucracy run by the types of politicians you hate the most, but they and their constituents also literally think they are the actual voice for God on Earth. And they are trusted with a LOT of money.

Doug Stanhope has a joke about the Pope. It was back when they were saying that the new Pope used to be a nazi. He said that it would be more concerning to him if he heard, "Did you hear about the new nazi? He used to be a Pope!"
