To my friends in the great state of Michigan: Listen loud and clear
You have the right to your protests. You have the right to believe what you want. Plant your garden, paint your house, go on your boats. I am upset by your posts. But in the end I am an adult. We can agree to disagree. However, today....I want you to know I am met with great sadness more than ever for the people of our state.
I am a Nurse. I am an ICU nurse in Detroit. I may one day be your nurse. My friends and coworkers may all be assigned to your care should you fall ill, or get hurt. Many of my classmates & coworkers over the years work at various health systems all over this state. We are now one. We are a family. We are fighting a pandemic.
As a healthcare provider we take care of people free of judgement. We have to. We wouldn’t be able to do our jobs and do them well if we let our emotions get in the way. In my nearly 20 years in the medical field I myself have personally taken care of rapists, drunk drivers, child abusers, cop killers, and even murderers.
You see as a healthcare provider we do not have the luxury of refusing the care we have to provide to anyone. Not even in the midst of this pandemic. Our governor placed the “Stay Home” order for a reason in attempts to control this virus and not overload those of us working so hard to win this fight. Like it or not it needs to be respected. From that day forward any poor decisions made may risk the lives of your coworkers, friends, family as well as myself.
So for those who still think this is a “hoax” “political agenda” or your “American right” and you have been stripped of your “Freedom”...Go ahead and continue to post away, write to the governor, do an interview. I don’t care. I may make a remark here or there disagreeing. But In the end I will politely agree to disagree. I have to. I will say today though...THANK YOU ....THANK YOU for still staying home despite being upset by all of these orders. I know your life has changed. So has mine. This is not easy on anyone. Being on the frontline is a different level of stress, what I see posted I take personal. I know it shouldn’t be. You wouldn’t understand where I’m coming from. As a parent the feeling is unbearable at times knowing full well what we are up against and what we are bringing home to our families.
However, for those who decided to get into your car this morning and take a drive...and partake in the events at our capital today. Shame on you!! You disgust me!! So if and when you come home and in the coming weeks should you fall ill, very very ill and see my face, hear my voice or any healthcare provider for that matter do not tell us you are sorry and have regrets that you did what you did today. You may feel the need to cry to a nurse because you will be scared, most likely terrified and possibly even dying. Your poor decisions today have now endangered not only your own life but the lives of hundreds more, including mine.
So if you have read this far...and you considered yourself a “friend” of mine and decided you are bigger than this, and actually got into your car and drove to Lansing today to protest. Please delete me. Immediately. Completely wipe me from your life.
I may not be able to chose my patients, but I sure as hell can chose my friends.
