And while you’re at it, who declares someone a criminal?
The government has the authority to label someone a criminal. criminal = a person who has committed a crime. That is pretty straight forward.

You really have to ask? I'm not even sure where to begin. I guess I'll start with the fact that facial recognition is easy to defeat by simply wearing a mask (or large sunglasses or large brimmed hat or on and on), so if it becomes widespread then masked criminals will become more common and then neither the cameras nor the victims will be able to identify them. Then eventually covering all or part of your face makes you suspicious. And it's just nobody's business where I go or what I do, especially not the fricking government's business, and it's far too tempting to cast a wide net and people end up guilty by association or hassled for no reason. It's also far too tempting to go the route of China and identify and track people of certain ethnicities. You can say it won't happen all you want, but it's happening in other countries at this moment and it could most definitely happen here. In short, it would only be effective for its stated purpose until it becomes known that it is in use, after which point all it will do is be a way for taxpayers to pay to spy on themselves. No thanks.
Criminals are some of the most ignorant and dumbest people in this world. Just because its easy to defeat, does not defeat the usefulness of the program. You are assuming criminals are smart enough to cover their faces at all times and they are indeed not smart.
Current facial recognition programs are not "monitoring tools." Honestly, nobody gives a flying F what you are doing or which stores you like to go to. That is including the government. They are queried-based applications that are ran for a purpose for law enforcement. Nobody cares what John Smith is doing, unless its illegal.
The China argument is brought up a lot. People love to say, "cause I don't want to be like China." In reality, we will never be like them because we have an old document nothing like what China has.
Facial Rec technology is nowhere nearas seen in movies. Right now, it is helping law enforcement catch criminals all over the country. It should be expanded so that more criminals can be taken off the streets.

Right. And they determine what a crime is. And they can manufacture evidence to say you committed a crime and are therefore a criminal. Sounds terribly authoritarian to me. Go to China if you want to live like this. Ask their dissidents how great it is.

but it wouldn’t. they’d target tax paying citizens for jaywalking, illegally parking, and littering while letting cultcha run rampant in the streets.
any arrests or citations made of BIPOC individuals using facial recognition would be called out as racial profiling.
so hard pass

Would you support a company like Clearview AI implementing facial recognition technology throughout your city if it could substantially help law enforcement identify criminals and reduce crime as a result?

You cannot just "manufacture evidence" lol. Oversight, internal affairs, protocols, policy, and many other mechanism make "manufacturing evidence" not plausible.

NO.
Law enforcement in BR can’t or won’t do shite even if you wrap it up in a bow for them.
And even if they get it to the DA, either the DA or the judge fricks something up.
All this would do is make it easier to harass people who actually have the money to pay fines instead of solving crimes.
