Someone got my credit card and used it at starbucks, mcdonald's, sonic, and a gas station. I cancelled it. Would you tell the police about this or forget about it?
It's really irritating so I'm leaning toward filing a report with the po

Call credit card company and let them close your account and send you a new card. Problem solved

Did the charges happen in the same city you reside in? If so, then yes.

Besides being lazy, why would you not report it?

CC = call company and have them take care of it
Debit Card = call bank and expect to have to file an affidavit with the police anyways.

Most definitely. Chanced are, they're just checking to see if you notice before they charge some big ticket items. You might need a police report to have it taken off your credit.

probably a waste of time. had some credit cards stolen one time which was used to purchase an ipad or something like that at a walmart. douchebag detective couldn't find out who it was even after being given a time, store # and checkout area (electronics, obviously).

did they physically steal your card?
One time I left a bar and the bartender acidentally gave me and another dude each other's cards. The next day he went out to lunch and I think got gas. It wasn't fraud, just a mixup. I called my bank and they canceled the card, reimbursed the charges, and gave me a new card.

Are you 18 and this is your first credit card?
Posted on 8/21/15 at 8:32 am to TheIndulger
I just dont understand why you wouldn't call the police?

Because filing a police report and taking the time out of your day is a waste after the cards cancelled.

Yes. People that do this don't just steal a card, they steal multiple. In my state it is a felony, and fraud is a crime of moral turpitude which means their testimony in any court can be and should be questioned for the rest of their life. What seems to be a little thing really is bigger when you look at all the ramifications.

Thats a serious issue.
I would call the credit card company as indicated but would also contact my bank and the credit bureaus and freeze my credit immediately.

Calling the credit card company is all you need to do. This isn't identity theft.

Report it. Common practice is they will use a stolen or compromised card (number) on a small item to see if it is valid. Usually, you will see several small charges before they go after something of value.

Exactly. It isn't you they stole from. Unfortunately, filing a police report is a waste of time and particularly for this as it seems to be petty theft. Until the credit card companies decide enough is enough and stop writing off these losses they are going to be common.

If they sign a credit card receipt, that is exactly what it is by definition.

I probably will. The main reason not to would be that it's not worth the time to pursue. I already got the charges cancelled so I would pretty much be fighting in the name of justice.
