Would you rather stay home than visit SO and her family?

I live with my SO. We are in Corpus Christi, her family is in San Antonio, roughly a 2 and a half hour drive to her folks house.

We love each other. We’ve been dating for a couple years with bigger plans ahead. With that said, I still know how to function independently. There are times during a holiday break where she wants to visit her family. I’m perfectly fine with that, and can find movies and other stuff around the house to take care of.

Right now, I just got in to SA. We are pretty much going to hang out with her family for the rest of the night and part of tomorrow before I drive back. We have pets to take care of and whatnot, so I can’t just leave them forever.

My question...to the other fellas who have to do this: wouldn’t you just rather stay home, drink some bourbon and watch football? It’s hard to keep that conversation flowing with future in-laws, even with my own family.

I'd rather stay home but not enough to piss my wife off that much. Her parents live 6 hrs from us.

A weekend home alone sounds like heaven

when she gives me the option, I always take the stay home option. I always probe like crazy to make sure it's a genuine offer and not a trap though!!

I stay at home. Wife’s family is 2 hours away. She had to be back there Christmas eve and Day. I was on call for Christmas Day but I told her I was on call for Eve too, so I got out of going to the in-laws.

You need to change your question to “would you rather go visit your wife’s family or roll naked on hot coals?” Then it would be a 50-50 proposition.

Most of being a grown up involves doing things you would rather not be doing

Post some pics of your SO for context.

The best results would be from some candid holiday snaps, wink-wink, nudge-nudge, know-what-I-mean-squire?

I would rather have holes drilled in my teeth and have aluminum foil inserted into each hole while being forced to listen to someone drag their fingernails across a chalkboard than spend time with the inlaws. Years ago my best friend nicknamed my wife's family as the Madams family. Half Manson family half Adams Family.

Who wouldn’t but you do those things out of love. It will make your girl happy and if you love her that should be your biggest priority especially if your her biggest priority.

You plan on continuing to do this if you marry her? Good luck with that.

Are you on the spectrum? How is making simple conversation difficult for you?

I can’t just stay home, even with my wife there. I get bored out of my mind

I would skip Christmas if I had something fun to do

I don’t play this shite. You don’t really mean it, better not even say it. If you stand your ground it works. Every time.

Like by hanging out on the East side of the International Date Line and jumping west at midnight on Christmas Eve?

Nah, my SO's extended family is all pretty cool and like to drink and play cards, plus it means a trip to Montana.

Sure, I'd rather do this than work too, but actions have consequences and we all do shite we don't want to do.

Don't be a beta and this won't be a problem.

Why do so many of y’all have shitty in laws? Not everyone has that experience. It seems like y’all make it worse than it should be

Either yall’s wives are completely different from their families (unlikely) or your wives suck too and y’all are just bad at picking a mate and will be divorced soon

Of course I would want to stay home. But she wants me there whenever her family gets together. So, I try to make her happy. She does the same for me.

I saw my family for Thanksgiving so I’ve met my yearly obligation. I have two close friends and one is deployed so no need to see him. Just saw the other one so I’m good.

So, yeah, I’d rather stay home with my fire pit and bourbon and watch CFB.
